CHOICES!

A wide variety of independent businesses, each serving their
customers’ tastes, creates greater overall choice for all of us.
Teachers and parents at home at School Shop

BLOOMINGTON — The School Shop — as its name
suggests – has been a supply source for bulletin board
decorations, stickers, cutouts and other curriculum
supplements for teachers for more than 20 years.
But owners Christy Komnick and Peg Shea say the
store, at 1224 Towanda Plaza, Bloomington, now offers
much more.
“We have a great selection of educational toys,” said
Komnick. “We’re trying to reach out to parents.”
That selection, added shortly after Komnick and
Shea purchased the business 2 ½ years ago,
includes logic and mind games, puzzles, science kits,
pretend play toys, a summer-bridge workbook series
for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, math
manipulatives, workbooks and flashcards.
This summer, The School Shop also is offering
storytimes and art and music classes.
While Komnick’s love of education came through many

years as a teacher in the Twin Cities, she fell into the
role of retail business owner quite by accident.
“One day I was shopping here and said (to former
owner Barb Lauritson), ‘If you ever want to sell this
place, give me a call,’” Komnick said.
A week later, she received a call from Lauritson, and
Komnick and her mom, Shea, decided to buy the
business.
“We didn’t have retail experience, but it’s been
rewarding,” she said. “We love helping teachers and
parents. It’s so worth it.”
The shop, which also has received a facelift under
the new ownership, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and
Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
More information, including about the shop’s
“personal shopper” service, is available at
