NORMAL - Gary L. Clem, 60, Normal, died at 12:43 p.m. Wednesday (Feb.18, 2009) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
His memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, with military rites accorded. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Special Olympics Illinois, 605 E. Willow St., Normal, IL 61761.
Gary was born Feb. 13, 1949, in Bloomington, the son of William and Mary Hartley Clem. He married Norma Snelling in 1973 at Bloomington.
He is survived by one daughter, Jessica Clem, Springfield; one son, Lance Jennings, Chenoa; one grandson, Logan Jennings; two sisters, Kathy Connelly and Linda (Ron) Stewart, both of Bloomington; five brothers, Danny (Brenda) Clem, Murphysboro, Tenn.; Bill (fiancée Deb) Clem, Marion, Ohio; Jack (Kim) Clem, Danvers; Tom (Marie) Clem, Downs; and Kenny (Ann) Clem, Bloomington; a fiancée, Marie McCurdy, Normal; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary attended Bloomington High School and was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army as a drill sergeant.
He was a member of Laborers Local 362, Bloomington; a life member of VFW, John H. Krauss Post 454, Bloomington; Eagles Lodge, Lincoln; American Legion, Waynesville; and volunteered for the Special Olympics for 25 years.
Gary was an avid Cardinals fan, NASCAR fan and golfer.
The family would like to thank all who helped care for Gary for several years.
He lived life to the fullest and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
