Cooling comfort heads to six schools in Unit 5
NORMAL -- Some might call Wednesday's Unit 5 school board votes tidings of comfort and joy. At least, when the heat of August rolls around they might. That's when air conditioning becomes a reality at six district schools that lack it. And it's when three other schools get additional classroom space for the district's growing student population. The changes - especially the air conditioning -- will help Unit 5 provide equitable learning environments for all district students, said Scott Lay, board president. Lack of air conditioning at several schools has drawn criticism from some parents and Unit 5 employees this year. The board approved spending nearly $1.4 million for heating and cooling projects next summer. Most of that will go toward installing geothermal heating and cooling systems at Glenn and Oakdale elementary schools. Four others -- Brigham, Carlock, Fairview and Hudson - are in line to get the geothermal systems within the next five years. For a temporary solution, the board OK'd spending $65,100 on classroom air conditioning units at the four schools. The geothermal approach is an environmentally friendly way to dramatically cut heating and cooling costs for the buildings, said John Pausackas, an engineer who serves on the board. "No. 1, we'll use less energy. And No. 2, we'll see a savings in costs," he said. In another project approved Wednesday, a $1.6 million permanent addition to Grove Elementary School will provide six more classrooms. Only $503,000 of that comes from the district's site and construction fund. The majority will be funded through the use money the town of Normal collects from developers for new schools. The board voted to set aside another $179,000 to lease several portable classroom units to be erected outside Chiddix and Parkside junior high schools. Bids will be sought for the portable classrooms, which also should be ready for students in August. |
