Stags, Rockets start hot
With three sets of brothers two of them twins on his roster, Hartsburg-Emden High School basketball coach Josh Nauman has to be a master of identification Helping the second-year coach along is the fact the Stags have held on to their winning identity. After a 22-8 season a year ago, Hartsburg-Emden is off to a 7-1 start. "We've been playing great defense," Nauman said. "We've been playing really aggressive and getting in the passing lanes. We've gotten a lot of easy baskets out of that." At 6-foot-3, senior Scott Ubbenga leads the Stags at 20 points per game. Ubbenga missed his team's loss to Deer Creek-Mackinaw Tuesday with a foot injury, but could return for Friday's contest at Peoria Heights. Sophomore Dakin Bolen adds 13 points while twin brother Dustin Bolen chips in 8. Senior Curt Conrady scores 7 points an outing, and junior brother Josh Conrady 11.5. Junior Gary Rademaker scores 9. The Stags' other twins are juniors Josh and Jason Rohlfs. "The Rohlfses can get a little confusing, but the others we have pretty well," Nauman said. "Sometimes the brothers are a little harder on each other than they need to be. They expect more out of each other." Also playing well in the early going is Roanoke-Benson at 6-1. "The season is off to a great start. The kids are working very hard and are very coachable," Rockets' coach Matt Gordon said. "It's been a very balanced team effort every night." Junior Tyler Rasmuson paces Roanoke-Benson with a 16-point average. Junior Nick Janssen adds 15, senior Ben Hodel 12 and senior Kaleb Fehr 11. Clinton is 5-3 behind the return of senior guard Kameron Bell. Averaging 23 points, Bell left the team early last season, according to Maroons' coach Karl Parrish. "We're playing relatively well," Parrish said. "We're shooting the ball fairly decent from outside. We're getting good balance." Clinton is also getting 16 points from junior John Smith, 12 from junior Ross Whitted and 10 from senior B.J. Spray. Lincoln (3-3) is averaging just 45 points per game with junior Brandon Farmer contributing 15.8 and junior Matt Schick 9.0. "Offensively, it's been a struggle," Railsplitters' coach Neil Alexander said. "It's a young team. We're trying different lineups. We're trying to get a rhythm going, but we haven't found it yet." A young Delavan team is 2-5. Returning starters are senior Brock Burrell and sophomore Jordan Zimmer. "We have two freshmen, three sophomores and a junior in our top seven," said Panthers' coach Ryon Kramer. "We make progress every day, but we can't keep good things going for a long period of time." Seniors Brandon Van Duzer (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Brooks Martin (15 points) have led the way for Streator (1-7). "We have to improve our rebounding and find someone else to help score," Bulldogs' coach Brandon Creason said. Dwight has split its first six games. Coach Mark Porter has returning starters in senior Evan Wyllie and junior Curt Perschnick. Illini Central is 4-3 after suffering large graduation losses from last season's 23-5 team. "We must be a very good defensive team if we want to reach our goal of 15-17 wins," Cougars' coach John Giesler said. Coach Jim Jumper's Mount Pulaski squad is 5-4 despite losing four of five starters from a 19-10 team. A member of the Tri-County Conference after many years in the Midstate, Woodland is 0-9 under 7th year coach Brian Roney. Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
