Poppe breaks LeRoy scoring record in win
Pantagraph staff Sam Poppe broke the LeRoy High School girls basketball career scoring record Wednesday night with a 19-point outing in a 57-32 victory over visiting Urbana Uni High. Poppe's 1,257 career points are one more than previous record holder Nancy Marcum. "She is probably one of the hardest workers I've ever coached, not just counting games, but practice and off-season, too," said LeRoy coach Brodie Flaherty. "She is really a good team player. She didn't know she was six points away until we told her at halftime." LeRoy (10-2) also received 13 points apiece from Chelsey Johnson and Laura Karr. Karr also had a team-high six assists and Kristy Bandy chipped in eight rebounds. "We came out playing outstanding defense," said Flaherty, whose team led, 18-2, after one quarter. "Our press is pretty effective. It was good to see Johnson finally scoring in double figures, and Karr, to take some pressure off of Poppe." At Braidwood Iroquois West 40, Wilmington 18: Iroquois West, which opened the season 0-8, improved to 4-9 with a triumph over Wilmington in the Lady Comet Classic consolation championship game. Abby Baier led the Raiders with nine points and Megan Flatt paced Wilmington (0-14) with nine. Iroquois West shut out Wilmington, 18-0, the first quarter. "We jumped out to the big lead and kind of sat on it the rest of the way," said Iroquois West coach Hanns Meyer. "Unfortunately, it made our second half play sloppy." Victoria Krones and Lauren Vaughn both made the all-tournament team for Iroquois West. Plano 44, Fieldcrest 20: Fieldcrest (3-11) received six points from all-tournament honoree Alaina Sunken in a third-place game loss to Plano (7-4) in the Lady Comet Classic. Jessica Martinez paced Plano with 14 points. In other action, Reed-Custer defeated Herscher, 56-43, to win the tournament and Manteno downed Gardner, 38-22, to take second in the consolation bracket.
