Bloomington falls to Hillcrest
Pantagraph staff The Bloomington High School basketball team took on a highly regarded program for the second straight weekend in a shootout. BHS (7-2) fell to Schaumburg last weekend in the Elgin Shootout and suffered the same fate against Hillcrest in the final game of the Hillcrest Shootout on Saturday. The Purple Raiders were down by seven at halftime and closed within four with four minutes remaining before falling 57-48. "I thought we competed pretty well," BHS coach Ron Rose said. "I really loved our competitiveness in a game that we didn't play well. "We are playing some of the top teams in the state to find out how to get to that next level." Justin Bocot led BHS with 14 points and had four rebounds. Tri-Valley 52, El Paso-Gridley 51 Grant Jones' shot from the lane at the buzzer in overtime lifted Tri-Valley over El Paso-Gridley in a nonconference game at El Paso. Jones' game-winner came after Jeremy Balf put the Titans (2-3) ahead with a basket with 18 second remaining. It appeared as if Tri-Valley (8-3) would win in regulation when Jones' two free throws with 3.9 seconds left put the Vikings up 48-46. But Brett Fogle drove the length of the floor and put up a one-handed shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. David Cripe led Tri-Valley with 18 points and Kyler Hardy added 13. Balf scored 14 to pace EPG. Nathan Zimmerman added 11. Prairie Central 55, Iroquois West 42 A 24-point effort by Brett Crane lifted Prairie Central to a nonconference win over Iroquois West at Gilman. "We played well in short spurts tonight," said Hawks coach Alan Dunahee. "We put some pressure on them, which gave us some easy buckets." Prairie Central built a 31-21 halftime lead. The Hawks increased the lead to 42-27 after the third quarter. Iroquois West closed the gap to nine points in the fourth quarter but couldn't get any closer. Phillip Short scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hawks. Kyle White scored 18 points to pace Iroquois West. Olympia 41, Peoria Christian 32 Alex Frantz scored 13 points to lead Olympia to a nonconference win at Peoria. The Spartans (5-3) trailed 15-11 at halftime but rallied to take a 25-9 lead after the third quarter and never let Peoria Christian back in the game. "We controlled the tempo of the game," said Olympia coach Paul Swanson. "We didn't let them run the floor which is what they like to do." Justin Boudeman added eight points for Olympia. Maroa-Forsyth 55, Fisher 35 Maroa-Forsyth gradually pulled away to top the Bunnies in a nonconference game at Fisher Saturday. Kyle Wantland paced Fisher with 20 points. Pontiac 53, Watseka 49 Pontiac dominated the first three quarters and coasted in for the victory over the host school at the Watseka Tournament. The Indians ran their record to 9-0 and will play for the tournament championship Tuesday night against a team still to be determined tonight. Kevin Lyons led a balanced Indians attack with 12 points. Kody Strong added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Pontiac, which led 40-14 after three quarters but was outscored 35-13 in the final period.
