BLOOMINGTON - Two people were arrested near Peoria after trying to steal items from a west-side Bloomington store, striking security guards and fleeing in a van Wednesday night.

Police said the man and woman were caught trying to steal items when loss prevention employees confronted the pair about 7:50 p.m. at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 2225 W. Market St. After the woman unsuccessfully tried to prove she owned the items, she and the man struck the security employees and the man implied he had a weapon.

It was unclear late Wednesday what the pair attempted to take.

The employees backed away as the woman got into the van and the man grabbed onto the hood, police said. She drove to Market Street, where the man got off the hood and into the van.

A person who saw the incident followed the van and called authorities. The pair headed west on Interstate 74 toward Peoria, police said, and the people inside were pulled over by Washington and East Peoria police.

The identities of the man and woman were not available Wednesday night.
