Notables from 2005 have remained busy

BLOOMINGTON - Last year's "10 to Watch" feature profiled the following people as newsmakers likely to make headlines in 2005. Here's an update:

w Ralph Timan, president of United Auto Workers Local 2488: After less than a month of negotiations, 77 percent of union members voted in August to approve a 31-month contract with Mitsubishi Motors North America. Provisions included increased wages each year of the pact. Timan called it a "major victory for our members."

w State Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa: Rutherford formally launched his campaign to unseat two-term Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White in the 2006 election.

* Janet Moore, flight director at the Challenger Learning Center at Prairie Aviation Museum: Moore helped organize a Twin City visit from former NASA astronaut Rhea Seddon in October.

* Larry Hundman, Twin City developer: Bloomington-Normal Arena Management, a group led by Hundman, lost its bid in October to run the U.S. Cellular Coliseum when the Bloomington City Council approved a contract with Central Illinois Arena Management, which had a first-right-of-refusal clause for the management.

Hundman dropped a lawsuit challenging the clause shortly after the council vote.

* Rob Houchin, regional superintendent of schools for Tazewell County: After 10 days of hearings conducted by Houchin, the Tazewell County Regional Board of School Trustees voted 6-1 on Dec. 12 to keep Hopedale in the Olympia school district rather than letting it detach and annex with Delavan.

* John Q. Hammons, hotel developer from Springfield, Mo.: The Normal City Council approved preliminary plans in November for a $30 million downtown Marriott Hotel by Hammons. The nine-story, 222- to 230-room hotel is expected to be ready for occupancy in late 2007 or early 2008.

* Boomer Grigsby, former ISU football player: Grigsby signed a three-year contract in July to play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

* Jeff Giebelhausen, president of development for Cullinan Properties: The Peoria-based company opened nine of the planned stores at the Shoppes at College Hills in mid-August. Eight other stores have since opened and work has started on a 129-room Hampton Inn on the southwest corner of the site.

* Carla Campbell-Jackson, community volunteer: Campbell-Jackson is the third vice president of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, volunteers at a variety of community organizations and co-founded a mentoring program for high school students.

* Dave Anderson, former Normal city manager and former interim director of Central Illinois Regional Airport: Carl Olson was named executive director of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in June. One month later, Anderson was hired as a part-time consultant to Olson.
