BHS comes back to win sloppy game

BLOOMINGTON -- There had been seven lost fumbles, two interceptions, three blocked punts and a blocked field goal, adding up to 13 misadventures on Friday the 13th.

Rich Kwitkowski decided there should be one more.

With the football on the Bloomington High School 2-yard line and under two minutes remaining, BHS’ Kwitkowski shot through from his nose guard position and hit Normal West quarterback Ross Schmillen, forcing a fumble that was recovered by BHS’ Brad Lanham.

The play preserved a wild 24-21 Big 12 Conference victory for the Purple Raiders, who trailed 21-0 in the second quarter.

“I was trying to shoot that gap the whole game,” Kwitkowski said. “We had to make a play. Good penetration on the line, that’s how it’s done. Just get in the backfield and cause a fumble.”

West was on the brink of a go-ahead touchdown after 6-foot-6, 235-pound Cody White rumbled 36 yards on a fake punt to the BHS 5. A 3-yard run by Rayshawn Johnson put the ball at the 2, setting up Kwitkowski’s decisive play on second down.

“When they faked that punt, we just got pumped,” he said. “That’s how we win ballgames.”

No. 10 state-ranked BHS (7-1, 7-1) scored 17 third-quarter points to wipe out a 21-7 halftime deficit.

The Raiders scored on a 30-yard run by tailback Darrelynn Dunn two plays after BHS lineman Eric Floyd recovered a West fumble at the Wildcats’ 32-yard line. A fumbled pitchout on West’s next possession gave BHS the ball at the Wildcats’ 26, leading to a 13-yard TD run by fullback Cole Lamberti. Adam Peden’s extra-point kick made it 21-21.

On West’s next series, White bobbled a low snap and his punt was blocked, giving the Raiders the ball at the West 16. A 27-yard field goal by Peden gave BHS the 24-21 lead with 3:06 left in the quarter, and neither team could score in a fourth quarter which included a blocked punt and three lost fumbles.

“It was a lot of heart by our kids to come back and to not fold,” BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer said. “I’m real proud of the effort in the second half. Hopefully, we’ll build on that.”

It was all West (5-3, 5-3) for most of the first half. White blocked a 36-yard field goal try by Peden, giving West possession at its own 48. The Wildcats used 13 running plays to score the first touchdown on a 1-yard run by fullback Jordan Flex.

A Cory Phillips interception gave West the ball back on its own 30, and two plays later Schmillen, making his first start in place of injured Todd Albert, ran 55 yards for a touchdown.

BHS’ Dunn fumbled the ensuing kickoff and West’s Matthew Haas recovered at the Raiders’ 31. That set up a 1-yard TD run by Schmillen midway through the second quarter. Jared Daugherty’s third extra-point kick made it 21-0.

BHS found some life 2:26 before halftime when defensive end Justin Zoeller stripped the ball from Schmillen and Floyd scooped up the fumble and ran 23 yards for a touchdown.

“I just saw the ball and had to go for it,” Floyd said. “At first I was going to (fall on it), but I thought, ‘We need the points.’ ”

“That was big,” Schmelzer said. “It puts you back within two scores. If we’re three down and they’re coming out and starting (the second half) with the ball, even with those quick turnaround scores (in the third quarter), we’re still down. A scoop up and run, that’s an important play.”

BHS held West to 40 yards in the second half after allowing 184 in the opening half. The Raiders ended with 198 yards of offense, led by Dunn’s 127 yards rushing on 20 carries. Schmillen had 85 yards in 31 attempts to lead West, which was without top rusher Darius Bell for disciplinary reasons.

“We had guys out of position. We had a quarterback who hadn’t taken a snap in five weeks and we were without our best running back, but our kids came together. That’s what it’s about,” West coach Darren Hess said. “This one stings. We had opportunities and we didn’t come up with them.

“I’m proud of our kids, but I don’t want to talk about moral victories because we came in here expecting to win. We’re here to compete and we had a great game plan. We left it on the field, but they made the plays when they had to.”

" To indygrad: Leave the conference and go where? You would have no choice but to become independent and then getting enough games for a nine game schedule is a nightmare. You obviously understand nothing about the administrative side of high school sports. "

" looking at the less than impressive records of the majority of Big12 (11) teams, saying that BHS has one of the best defenses in the Big 12 isn't really much of a statement. There are only four maybe five teams in the Big12 (11) that are playoff caliber. Of those NCHS, I believe won pretty handily. In games against other playoff caliber teams BHS struggled to beat West and Centennial. If holding 2-6 and 0-8 teams to seven points means BHS has a great defence then I guess they have a great defense. "

" bloomington has the ability and the players to go very deep in the play off's. but really the one thing stopping them from domintating is the offensive line. if they can establish an offensive line and stick with down field blocks they can open a whole nother ball game down the road. it seems to me from watching that they have more trouble run blocking than pass blocking. if they can sustane blocks downfield look for them to cause trouble in the playoff's. but their defense on the other hand......hands down is one of the best defense's in the big 12. good game to both teams last night! "

" I posted this over at the NCHS site. Don't you BHS and West fans feel its time to leave the Big 12(11) Conference. 75% of the teams offer little more than a scrimmage. The only loses that B/N teams have are to each other and occasionally Centennial. How do the teams get playoff ready when they play teams that offer no competition. With 11 conference teams there is no opportunity to schedule quality non-conference opponents. Scrap the Big 12, call it the Big Three occasionally Big Four and the once in a while the Big 5. "

" why would they play in the offseason? obviously a west graduate talking that nonsense. "

Justin wrote on Oct 14, 2006 6:20 PM:

" Had West not fumbled, they would have won the game hands down. BHS only scored on those key fumbles, and I can guarantee that if we see them in the off-season, West will win. One more thing, note how BHS never was able to get a decent drive going. "

" CmonCoach needs a serious reality check. Despite the closeness of the game between BHS & NCWHS, how many teams in high school football could dominate the first half of a football game against a state-ranked opponent based on the following facts: "We had guys out of position. We had a quarterback who hadn’t taken a snap in five weeks and we were without our best running back". What other excuse(s) are you looking for? Those seem pretty valid to me. Here's another one for you: Did you notice our starting long-snapper and center weren't playing in the game either? Hats off to West for playing through team adversity. Hats off to BHS for making a comeback. "

" "We had guys out of position. We had a quarterback who hadn’t taken a snap in five weeks and we were without our best running back". Um coach, we looked awesome with that first 21 points. From the stands, the 1st half it looked like none of those things were a factor. How did we get turned around after halftime? We hung in there with NCHS, we blasted BHS the first half. We need a different excuse then those. To BHS, great game. The team who wanted it more came out on top. To both schools, it was a pleasure to watch. I love highschool football, your keeping it real!!
