Illinois State sports news

Women’s soccer

Despite outshooting Northern Iowa 24-5, the Illinois State soccer team failed to score for the fourth straight game, falling 1-0 to Northern Iowa in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday at Adelaide Street Field in Normal.

The win snapped Northern Iowa’s 28-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Panthers are 1-13 overall and 1-3 in the Valley. ISU is 3-7-3 and 0-3-1, respectively.

Illinois State coach Pete Kowall thought Northern Iowa set the pace for the game from the beginning.

“The first couple of minutes they took it to us a little bit,” he said. “I think that was an indication that this was going to be a harder game than we had originally anticipated. Our players didn’t step up to the challenge. We had enough chances and we couldn’t stuff one into the net.”

The lone goal came in the 15th minute by the Panthers’ Jackie Gielau. The unassisted goal was the third of the year for Gielau.

Cross country

Senior Betsy McDonald led the Illinois State women’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the Bradley Classic in Peoria.

McDonald completed the women’s 6K race in 22:42 and was the Redbirds’ highest finisher in 11th place. The men’s team, backed by strong performances by Mike Richardson and Scott Krapf, finished in fifth place.

Junior Suzy Turner finished one spot behind McDonald in 12th place with a time of 22:51.

“The women ran well,” said ISU coach Jeff Bovee. “I was pretty satisfied with their performances. Betsy bounced back and was able to hang on at the end of the race.”

Richardson led the men’s squad, finishing the men’s 8K race in 13th with a time of 26:05. Krapf was close behind, finishing 19th in 26:24.

Women’s tennis

Senior Katri Miller prevailed in a singles match and teamed with Veronique Parke-Bedard to win two doubles matches at the Mizzou Mock Duals in Columbia, Mo.

There are no team scores. Missouri, Iowa State and Saint Louis also are participating.

Women’s swimming

Divers Katie Janonis, Liza Perrino and Annette Danilowski led the ISU women’s swim team to a 196.5-97.5 win over Northern Iowa at Horton Pool in Normal.

All three divers set season bests in both the 1- and 3-meter boards to pace an injury and illness-depleted Redbird squad.

“The girls competed hard but we still have a lot of the team out sick and injured,” said ISU coach Steve Paska. “We are very happy with what the swimmers who are healthy and training are doing but right now we really need some girls to get healthy.”
