Volleyball team takes second
The Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team won two matches Saturday to take second place in the Emory National Invitational Tournament in Atlanta, Ga.
The Titans defeated Vassar (N.Y.), 30-22, 30-18, 30-21 before dispatching Ripon (Wis.), 30-23, 30-17, 30-17.
Melissa Serritella had 17 kills and Lisa Cercello added 14 in the two matches for IWU, which improved to 18-10. Jenna Passananti contributed 84 assists, while Jaclyn Verticchio recorded 29 digs.
“We did a really nice job,” said IWU coach Kim Nelson-Brown. “It gave us an opportunity to work on some things we’ve been focusing on and put different people in different positions.”
IWU’s next match is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against North Central at Shirk Center. The Titans will be honoring six seniors on Senior Night — Cercello, Serritella, Verticchio, Sarah Vegter, Colleen Ernst and Natalie Quinton.
“It’s going to be a hard night. This is a great group of girls graduating,” said Brown. “Hopefully we can send them off with a great night.”
Men’s soccer shut out
Wisconsin-Oshkosh turned back the IWU men’s soccer team 5-0 in a nonconference match at Oshkosh, Wis. The Titans fell to 6-9-1.
“We played on a surface that was rather slick. That affected both teams,” said IWU coach Ryan Lakin. “Certainly it was a bit of a disadvantage for us playing on that surface. As much as we love our field it’s tough to duplicate the same environment.”
Wheaton beats women’s soccer
Libby Passiales scored an unassisted goal at the 37:40 mark of the first half and it held up as Wheaton downed IWU 1-0 and handed the Titans their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin loss in a women’s soccer match at Bloomington.
Wheaton (14-2 overall, 5-1 CCIW) outshot the Titans 19-7. Emily Castner made eight saves for IWU (10-5-1, 4-1).
