CCHS boys earn first Class A cross country regional title

The No. 11-state ranked Central Catholic High School boys cross country team won the first Class A regional in school history Saturday, scoring 45 points to dominate the Monticello Regional.

The Saints packed five men in the top 12 to easily outdistance runner-up Monticello by 39 points.

Central Catholic advanced to Saturday’s 2 p.m. Olympia Sectional along with No. 14-state ranked Olympia (88), Tolono Unity (97) and Heyworth (118).

Clinton placed eighth (174) and Tri-Valley ninth (175).

Monticello’s Brent Rhodes won the 3-mile race, clocking 16 minutes 24 seconds. He was followed by Heyworth’s Zach Switzer (16:30) and Zach Bowling (16:46).

The five individual qualifiers not on advancing teams included Tri-Valley’s Chase Geiser (11th, 17:17) and Clinton’s Ryan Greer (19th, 17:49).

Scoring for Central Catholic were Austin Quinn (fourth, 16:56), John Curran (fifth, 16:57), Derek Haas (eighth, 17:06), Tyler Johnson (13th, 17:21) and Daniel Burr (17th, 17:35).

Olympia was led by Jason Beach (10th, 17:17), Eric Biehl (12th, 17:17) and Brian Peterson (14th, 17:22).

Thompson wins at Farmington

Tremont sophomore Parker Thompson won the Farmington Class A Regional, clocking 15:55 for 2.95 miles. He finished nine seconds ahead of runner-up Dustin Emerick of team champion Elmwood-Brimfield.

No. 1-state ranked Elmwood-Brimfield scored 42 points to advance to its own 11:15 a.m. sectional next Saturday.

Also qualifying were Delavan (67), No. 12-state ranked Tremont (69), Illini Central (74) and Farmington (87).

Other area runners in the top 10 were Delavan’s Kody Nelson (third, 16:05) and Jeff Camp (sixth, 16:49), Tremont’s John Boyle (fifth, 16:41) and Illini Central’s Kyle Hodgson (seventh, 17:03).

Three advance at Eureka

Three Pantagraph area teams advanced from the Eureka Regional including runner-up Eureka (48), third-place Fieldcrest (110) and fourth-place Prairie Central (131). El Paso-Gridley was eighth (175).

No. 8-state ranked Henry-Midland won with 41 to edge the No. 13 Hornets. Qualifiers advanced to the Olympia Sectional.

Peru St. Bede’s Matt Morse won in 15:23, 19 seconds ahead of runner-up Brian Peterson of Fieldcrest. Eureka’s Stephen Mooberry was fifth (16:15), Crue Harmon sixth (16:40) and Jacob Wyss eighth (16:40).

The five individual qualifiers included El Paso-Gridley’s Pierce Furrow (12th, 16:56) and Tom Forman (20th, 17:49).

Prairie Central was led by Philip Johnson (15th, 17:21) and Ben Adams (17:38).

PBL wins first regional

No. 6-state ranked PBL won its first regional in school history, scoring 41 points in the St. Joseph-Ogden Regional at Kickapoo State Park to edge Georgetown-Ridge Farm-Chrisman by five.

Prior to consolidation, Paxton won a regional in 1985.

The Panthers, who advanced to the Olympia Sectional, were led by freshman Tom Pacey in fifth (17:06).

Other PBL scorers were Devin Bergman (seventh, 17:13), Felix Cardosa (eighth, 17:15), Nick Brehm (ninth, 17:18) and David Woolridge (12th, 17:29).

Gardner-Dwight advances

The Gardner-Dwight co-op placed fourth with 112 points in the Seneca Regional to advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. Lisle Sectional.

Gardner-Dwight was led by junior Mitch Small (15th, 18:09).

“The boys team showed great desire and focus to finish fourth and advance to the Lisle Sectional,” said Gardner-Dwight coach Larry Lane.

No. 10 state-ranked Beecher won with 31. Manteno’s Cody McCollough was the top individual in 16:16.
