Eureka girls win Class A regional cross country crown
The No. 6-state ranked Eureka High School girls cross country team, led by individual champion Olivia Klaus, won its own Class A Regional Saturday, scoring 29 points. The Hornets, who have won nine consecutive regionals, advanced to Saturday’s 1 p.m. Olympia Sectional along with Henry-Midland (67), Hall (85), IVC (86) and El Paso-Gridley (90). Fieldcrest was sixth (134). Klaus toured the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 18 seconds to best runner-up Raven Pettry of Henry-Midland by 35 seconds. Also scoring for the Hornets were Deidra Klaus (third, 19:40), Emily Gerber (fourth, 20:10), Stephanie Fellner (seventh, 20:53) and Larissa Mooberry (14th, 22:10). El Paso-Gridley was led by Hailey Rigger (fifth, 20:26), Robin Eastwood (10th, 21:21) and Emily McCormick (13th, 21:51). The individual qualifiers included Prairie Central’s Tessa Nussbaum (13th, 21:34) and Fieldcrest’s Alaina Sunken (17th, 22:15). Tri-Valley, Olympia advance No. 13-state ranked Tri-Valley, led by the 2-3 finish of Stephanie Brown and Erin Kelley, advanced second (66) and Olympia fourth (88) from the Monticello Regional. No. 12 Decatur St. Teresa won with 63 points. Monticello edged sixth-place Central Catholic for the final qualifying spot, 110-132. Argenta-Oreana took third (93). Heyworth was seventh (132) and Clinton eighth (211). Brown clocked 18:25 and Kelley 18:51 to trail only defending champion Aftan Noon of Argenta-Oreana (18:20). The individual qualifiers included Central Catholic’s Kelly Curran (fourth, 18:55) and Cassidy O’Brien (19th, 21:28) and Heyworth’s Ashley Porter (fifth, 19:10) and Danielle Dixon (ninth, 20:20). Olympia was led by Emily Baldyga (11th, 20:36). Three advance at Farmington Three area teams advanced from the Farmington Regional including runner-up Tremont (64), third-place Illini Central (83) and fourth-place Delavan (100). No. 1-state ranked Elmwood-Brimfield won with 20. The only non-Elmwood-Brimfield runner in the top eight was champion Alyssa Imig of Tremont, who clocked 20:00 on the 2.95-mile course. She won by 14 seconds over Jessi Rosecrans of Elmwood-Brimfield. Qualifiers advanced to Saturday’s 10:30 a.m. Elmwood Sectional. Tremont swept places 13 to 15 thanks to Carrie Pflederer (22:05), Kristen Green (22:09) and Mandy Wirtjes (22:29). Leading Illini Central and Delavan, respectively, were Kathleen Harney (ninth, 21:01) and Grace Hawkins (10th, 21:16). Gardner-Dwight takes sixth Forty-four points separated Gardner-Dwight from a qualifying spot as it placed sixth with 150 in the Seneca Regional. Reed-Custer took fifth with 106. Beecher won with 37 and the individual title went to Ryan Eichelberger of Reed-Custer (19:16) for the second straight year. Theresa Wollgast led Gardner-Dwight in 32nd (23:48). PBL runs seventh PBL scored 188 points to place seventh in the St. Joseph-Ogden Regional at Kickapoo State Park where No. 7-state ranked Urbana Uni High won with 24. Michelle Mehnart led a 1-2-3 sweep for Urbana Uni High, clocking 19:18. Kay Frichtl led PBL in 33rd (24:43). Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
