Man charged with impregnating step-daughter
By Associated Press
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A Puerto Rican man faces sex assault and other charges after a paternity test established that he impregnated his 10-year-old stepdaughter, police said Friday.
The suspect has been charged with eight counts of sexual assault, attempted rape and lascivious acts for allegedly having sexual relations with a child.
The girl's mother, who told police she twice caught her husband having sex with her daughter and forgave him, has been charged with two counts of intentional neglect or abuse by means of omission.
"The test was 99.99 percent positive," said agent Lymaris Cruz, of the Sex Crimes Division for Humacao, a city of about 62,000 in southeastern Puerto Rico.
Both parents are being held in jail and the U.S. territory's Department of the Family has taken custody of the girl and her 7-year-old sister.
The case surfaced in September after school officials complained to the girl's mother that she had stopped wearing her uniform. A school social worker said the mother told him the uniform no longer fit and believed her daughter might have a tumor, El Nuevo Dia reported. The mother later acknowledged the girl was pregnant and school officials contacted authorities.
A judge and lawyers for both sides will meet Oct. 26 to discuss if the girl can testify via closed circuit. Court officials will also then set a date for a preliminary hearing, said Jorge Umpierre, a spokesman for Puerto Rico's Court Administration.
