Men accused of selling crack at motel

BLOOMINGTON -- Two Bloomington men are accused of using a room at the Coachmen Motel to sell $100 worth of crack cocaine to undercover police.

John Crawford, of the 300 block of North Gridley Street, faces two counts of manufacture and delivery of cocaine and William Horst, of the 200 block of North Roosevelt Street, was charged with permitting unlawful use of a building and drug conspiracy. Both are in custody.

Crawford will have to produce $10,000 in cash to post bond, while Horst is being held in lieu of $15,000.

Crawford, 42, and Horst, 29, were arrested Friday morning after selling crack to an undercover officer the night before in room 116 of the Coachmen Motel, also known as the Friendship Inn.

Crawford rented the room, while Horst actually sold the single gram of cocaine for $100.

Both men have extensive criminal records.

" Give me a break, Stupidity. Stop mentioning these people moving in next door to me because, here's something you apparently failed to catch- they already do. It's the one right next door. Anyway, what am I to do? Call the cops, have the cops shake them up a bit, then have the people at the Coachman know I was the one that called? Good idea. They'll love that the next time they see me walking home alone from work. Not to mention, if a couple of drug raids and coke deals can’t get anything done there, what do you think the city will do in regards to a few phone calls from me saying I’ve been yelled at? There may be good people that live there but this is in reference to the drug users/dealers that have overrun the building, which the city and the owner already know about. Obviously my problems with the Coachman are far from cosmetic- or as you say “cosmedic”- issues as, if that were ever the problem, I wouldn’t have moved into my building in the first place. I only care about my safety and the safety of others, not the superficial flaws. "

" WHY HAS THE OWNER NOT TRIED TO CLEAN UP THE PLACE? HECK EVEN A COAT OF PAINT WOULD BE NICE BUT THEY ARE WAY TO LAZY "

" But open minded people look beyond the present time and invision possibility's that the closed minded people of Bloomington have no way of observing. I look foreward to the day they ( the so called crack heads as you put it) move in next door to you. I think if thats going on there the police are not doing there job point blank and simple thats a police problem not your problem or the owners! "

Stupidity wrote on Oct 24, 2006 4:58 AM:

" Yeah Im sure you have $8,000 a month for the bills on the place to pay when he kicks the people out and they move in next door to you since the charitable organazations will put them in the dumps everyone has in there area. But it's ok then they get absorbed into the community where they are less watched. These people need home as well as you but since they are different many with disability's you want them gone cause they live in a building that has paint pealing and needs alot of cosmedic work. "

" Why this roach infested rat hole is still standing. It is not a viable place to live. It is so demeaning to the people that live there. Where would they go? Who knows, but the police would not have to make visits there 5 to 10 times a night, or pick up people beaten with a golf club. You can chase smokers but can't do something with this rat trap??? Explain this to me please???? "

" I live in the Lafayette building next door to the Coachman. I am a 21 year-old girl and live alone, with no family here. I have no car and need to get to and from work at SF downtown. I walk past the coachman each day on my way to/from work. Every day walking home, I am harassed. I have been called horrible names, have been verbally threatened and was even threatened for several weeks by a group of people, adults, even, with a vicious dog. It’s terrifying and extremely unfair that I have to deal with these problems daily when the city is fully aware of the monsters that live there and what they do. These people, as this article goes to show, are crackheads. There’s no telling what they may one day do as they have nothing else to live for as it is. I just wanted to respond to the comment made by “Stupidity” where he or she stated they wish the city would provide the owner with the money to restore the building. The owner knows what these people do and obviously doesn’t care. Any money provided to him should go solely towards demolition. "

" does the city of bloomington or the police dept own the coachman. the police dept could use this as a trap to catch drug dealer forever. how ever for safety the city should have it knocked down right after the build inspector condems it. "

" The was the previous council that agreed to front money for that and other projects. Some of the new council members though ran on a policy of not spending more money on big projects, basically an arena backlash. So they are not going to spend anything, even if it is to get rid of a legitimate problem. "

Stupidity wrote on Oct 23, 2006 9:23 AM:

" tear down this place, as well as all places where drugs are sold. That would be 21% of the homes in Bloomington, why not it would be the reason to tear down someone's dream to rebuild a hotel The owner wants nothing more than to rebuild Why are people so resistant to the idea of even helping the owner? The city needs to see that it will never happen with restrictions or fines, he has no way to finace the rebuilding. The city gave hundreds of thousands to have a old movie theater rebuild 3 blocks from the coachman. Yet I know no one that is even remotly interested in going to the theater. On the flip side I know many people that go to hotels on a regular basis and would love for the coachman, with it's location and all, be reserected. But with views of the majoritiy of Bloomington, the way they are, this bit of bloomington history will be gone, unless the city steps up and does it's job and help the citizens of Bloomington by supporting the Coachman and loaning the owner the money to rebuild this historic asset! "
