Pontiac church looking at new site
PONTIAC — A Pontiac church is looking to build a new house of worship near two other new religious facilities. The Assembly of God Church in Pontiac is looking to purchase five acres on Deerfield Road on the west side of Pontiac. The city of Pontiac’s planning and zoning committee recommended a special-use permit for the land to allow a church to be built there. The City Council will make the final decision. The proposed site is near the new buildings for St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall. The Assembly of God Church site is just south of a proposed supportive-living facility. The Rev. Timothy Priest said the congregation has outgrown its current site at 15552 E. 1830 North Road. That site is in an industrial area, and the congregation is looking to move to a more urban setting. “We have been looking for a new site,” Priest said. “We just need a larger facility.” The church has about 50 members, but about 80 people attend its services. Church Deacon Kathy Compton said that once the council approved the special-use permit, the church will form a building committee. The committee will decide the new facility’s size and style. Priest said fund-raising efforts already have begun, but there is no set goal for how much needs to be raised. Priest said it may take more than a year before building can start. |
