Training grants for 2012 London Games
By Associated Press
LONDON -- Olympic organizers are offering $16.9 million in grants to foreign athletes who want to train in Britain for the 2012 London Games.
All 203 national Olympic committees and 161 national Paralympic committees will be eligible to apply for grants of up to $49,000 for use at designated facilities.
“For many visiting athletes, the regional training camps will provide the first experience of the people, places and culture of the UK at they prepare for 2012 Games,” organizing committee chief Sebastian Coe said. “This represents a very special opportunity for us all to reach out and welcome the world’s athletes to the UK.”
Committee sports director Debbie Jevans said the grants will be allocated “fairly and equitably” to offset the cost of using the camps.
“The grants will help athletes from smaller nations who would not otherwise have the financial resources to use pregames training camps,” she said.
The IOC ethics commission opened an inquiry in 2005 after London offered more than $20 million in assistance to national Olympic committees. The incentives were considered a violation because they were not included in Lon-don’s original bid documents. The IOC dropped its inquiry after London withdrew the package.
