ISU volleyball sweeps Aces

NORMAL -- Exactly one month ago, the Illinois State volleyball team lost its fourth consecutive match of the season when it was swept in Evansville. On Sunday, the Redbirds were the ones with the broom, as they brushed off the Purple Aces (30-25, 30-21, 30-27) for an important Missouri Valley Conference win at Redbird Arena.

The victory gives the sizzling Redbirds (12-10, 6-5) their eighth win in their last 10 matches and three straight.

“It’s wonderful,” ISU coach Sharon Dingman said. “We’re playing some pretty good volleyball right now and it feels great.”

Erin Lindsey posted a match-high 34 set assists, but her initiative on both offense and defense was what impressed her coach. Lindsey’s 18 digs and five blocks assists led the team, while her five kills constantly bewildered Evansville (11-11, 5-6).

Her play was one of the first things Dingman highlighted following the match.

“Erin Lindsey is certainly maturing,” Dingman said. “Her decisions are really good. Tonight she blocked, she dug and did everything right.”

Kari Staehlin knocked down 12 kills to post a .375 hitting percentage, which was better than anyone with more than four attempts. Staehlin was one of three Redbirds with double-digit kills.

“I feel like Erin (Lindsey) did a great job at seeing me in the air and giving me and all the other hitters the ball,” Staehlin said.

As usual, Lindley McDavid and M.C. Richmond did the majority of attacking from the outside for ISU. McDavid tallied six of her match-high 14 kills in game two to guide the Redbirds to a nine-point win.

“Lindley (McDavid) was exceptional tonight as an offensive player,” Dingman said. “I think she senses that her career is eight to 12 matches away from being over.”

Richmond’s 10 kills and 10 digs provided stability for an ISU squad who leads the Valley with 802 digs. Kasey Mollerus and Jessie Janik combined for 29 of the 73 Redbird digs against the Purple Aces.

ISU struggled in game three, falling behind 11-19, but a five-point Redbird run forced an Evansville timeout. The Redbirds continued their comeback, winning eight of the next 11 points to tie the match at 22 apiece. ISU would hold off the Aces for a three-point victory.

“Kasey (Mollerus) was serving and they got a little bit out of system, which helped us out a lot,” Dingman said. “We got the ball to Kari (Staehlin) when we needed to get the ball to Kari, and that was big.”

Sarah Treadway and Megan Spurlock each had eight kills for Evansville. Julie Walroth’s 25 digs were a match-high.

ISU has four days to rest and refine its play before Friday’s match at Drake.
