ISU women’s soccer wins late
By Pantagraph Staff
Meghan Boler’s game-winning goal in the 84th minute enabled the Illinois State women’s soccer to escape with a 2-1 victory over Missouri State on Sunday at Adelaide Street Field in Normal. The win ensures that the Redbirds will advance to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
The win is the third straight for ISU (6-7-3, 2-3-1), which is the No. 4 seed in the MVC tournament and will host a play-in game at noon next Sunday at Adelaide Street Field against Missouri State.
“It was a very emotional day for our team with everything that happened,” ISU coach Pete Kowall said. “It was an amazing feeling to come back and I’m really proud of my team and the way they responded all year.”
In the 83rd minute, Redbird senior Jackie Rucinsky was issued a red card, forcing ISU to play a player short the rest of the game. Only a minute later, Mel Routledge took a corner kick for the Redbirds. The kick was short, but ISU kept the ball inside the box.
Carrie Schurr played the ball to a streaking Boler, who one-touched the pass to the far post. The goal was Boler’s third on the year.
Missouri State (9-7-2, 2-3-1) broke through first on an unassisted goal by Caroline Sweeney in the 49th minute. The Redbirds responded 10 minutes later on an Amanda Wisniewski goal, which was assisted by Rucinsky and Amanda Lauber.
The game featured 23 fouls between the two teams and both teams finished with 12 shots.
ISU closes the regular season at home against Eastern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
