5 years ago (2001): The Illinois Wesleyan women’s golf team had four players finish in the top 10 as the Titans won the four-team Franklin (Ind.) College Fall Invitational. IWU’s Melissa McMahon finished with a 169 total for runner-up honors behind winner Deb Garriott (164) of DePauw.
15 years ago (1991): Senior Brian Jackson scored two goals including the winning one with 37 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Calvary Baptist Academy soccer tam over Decatur Christian, 2-1. The victory qualifies the Crusaders for the four-team Illinois Association of Christian Schools state tournament.
25 years ago (1981): Brian James, a 1977 graduate of Illinois State University, was named the 1981 Grand Slam Award winner by Redbird base-ball coach Duffy Bass. James, a teacher and coach at Taylorville High School, played for the Redbirds in the mid-1970s.
50 years ago (1956): Football scoreboards in the Midstate Conference may become as outmoded as an automobile without 20-foot fins erupting from its rear fenders if Fairbury’s offensive machine continues to roll. The Tartars have a 40-point average in the Midstate and are led by Dick Doran, who has 90 points to lead the league in scoring.
