A number of Pantagraph area athletes signed national letters of intent for Division I scholarships Wednesday or are expected to sign within the next week.

Here is a breakdown of area signees whose commitments were previously announced in the Pantagraph:

-- Megan Laughlin of Flanagan High School with the University of South Carolina for volleyball. The 6-foot-1 middle hitter leads the Pantagraph area with 5.6 kills per game. She has sparked the 32-7 Falcons to their first appearance in Friday’s Class A state tournament quarterfinals. She placed third in last spring’s Class A state track meet triple jump after helping Flanagan’s basketball team go 29-5 and place fourth in the state last winter.

-- Kyndell Highland of University High with DePaul for volleyball. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter averaged 3.6 kills for a 23-13 regional championship team, which shared the Corn Belt Conference championship with Mahomet-Seymour.

-- Nicki Gerig of Normal Community with Auburn for volleyball. The 5-foot-7{ setter averaged 10.6 assists for the 31-7 Ironmen, who won Intercity, Big 12 Conference and regional titles. She is a member of the Illini Elite Volleyball Club along with Laughlin and Highland.

-- Hannah Stout of Normal Community with Tulsa for volleyball. The 6-foot-2 middle blocker averaged 3.0 kills. She earned all-Big 12 honorable mention as a junior when she helped the Ironmen reach the Class AA Elite Eight for the fifth consecutive year.

-- Kristin Petrinec of Bloomington with Illinois-Chicago for basketball. The 6-foot-2 Petrinec averaged 12.2 points and 9.2 rebounds last season as the Purple Raiders went 19-9 and shared the Big 12 Conference championship. She is a two-time Pantagraph All-Area choice and a two-time all-Big 12 performer.

The 6-3, 175-pound Dunson averaged nine points, six rebounds and four assists last year for the balanced Saints, who finished 25-5 and reached the Class A sectional finals. The senior guard is the brother of Iowa State guard Dodie Dunson, a former Bloomington High School star.

-- Abby Olson of Hartsburg-Emden with Illinois State for softball. The 5-foot-11 catcher led the area last spring in batting average (.521) and home runs (six). She had eight doubles and 26 runs batted in. She has helped the Stags to three consecutive Elite Eight appearances in volleyball.

-- Laura Morris of Mahomet-Seymour with Indiana for track and field. The reigning Class AA state high jump runner-up will compete in that event and the heptathlon for the Hoosiers. Her heptathlon personal best of 4,573 points ranked second nationally last season. She is also an all-Corn Belt Conference star in basketball and the kill leader for a conference co-champion volleyball team.
