Other things more risky than smoking
Advertisement

Bloomington and Normal have banned smoking in public because of the dangers to health.

Smoking is dangerous that is true, but let me ask: Would you rather be in a closed garage with someone smoking a pack of cigarettes or with a car that is running?

I am not saying you should do either but let's put health risks in perspective.

If we are going to start banning things, then we should ban the most dangerous first.

" If "To William" thinks this is the dumbest letter ever, they haven't read many of the other smoking ban letters. Many put this one to shame. "

Let's ban this too, wrote on Nov 23, 2006 8:52 PM:

" I think that knee high socks should be banned also. There is only one thing uglier than a woman in knee high socks. It's a woman in knee high socks with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. So knee high socks have to go. If you see someone in their yard smoking because it will be the only legal place, this is what you will be looking at. The only other thing that you could possibly see is a blazing red, full fledge sweat suit, with white tennis shoes. (and probably knee high socks) "

" This is by far the DUMBEST letter ever written to the Pantagraph. THIS IS WHY WE DO NOT STAND IN GARAGES WITH CARS RUNNING, IT CAN KILL YOU. WE DO NOT ALLOW CARS IN BARS EITHER, OR ANY OTHER BUILDINGS FOR THE SAME REASON. YOUR LETTER ONLY FURTHERS THE CAUSE FOR NO SMOKING IN BARS. I THINK YOU HAVE SPEND TOO MUCH TIME IN A GARAGE SMOKING SOMETHING BESIDES CIGARETTES. IF YOU WORK IN A CAR SHOP, THEY PUT A HOSE ON THE EXHAUST AND RUN IT OUTSIDE WHILE THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. IF YOU SMOKERS WANT TO WALK AROUND A BAR WITH A HOSE ATTACHED TO YOUR HEAD WHILE YOU ARE SMOKING, I WOULD BE COOL WITH THAT. "

Alcohol IS NEXT... wrote on Nov 23, 2006 12:16 PM:

" That Is THE Plan...The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation is one on the biggest "charitable" contributors of hundreds of millions of dollars, to organizations such as the ACS, ALA, AHA, etc. to help institute smoke bans in a myriad of ways including advertising, lobbying, & administration costs. The RWJF is anti-tobacco and anti-alcohol. Just check their website for confirmation. So if their smoke bans take out a few small independent bar owners along the way of the smoke bans, then they get two bbirds with one stone. Can you say prohibitionist? "

" Yeah we have heard that cancer is one of the leading causes of death, but so is heart disease, strokes, diabetes, accidents, homicides, and natural causes, (old age) Natural causes is right up there with cancer. Gracie Allen died of a heart attack, not lung cancer. George lived to 100 yrs old. There is probably no way to tell if her heart problems were from second hand smoke, the foods she ate, or just that her family had bad genes. I think she was in her mid 60s when she died. "

" I guess that if your immune system is in poor shape to begin with, you have a very good chance of getting cancer. Cancer happens when your body can not successfully fight off impurities that have entered into it. That's your immune system working or should I say not working. Did you know that the tap water you drink has cancer causing chlorine in it. It's the cheapest thing the cities can use to purify it. OK, so you drink bottled water or have a filter on your kitchen sink. How about the water that you shower with? It has the same chlorine in it and your body is absorbing it. I hope you don't use that water, or let your children use it either. You are breathing a mist into your lungs that contains chlorine. Now go after the city or demand that you can have a well drilled. If you are waiting on the FDA to tell you this before you believe it, I'm sorry for you. "

" I believe, coffee and milk have more related risks involved, put things into perspective, do your own research, google, milk dangers, vinyl, radon, water, chemicals, pestisides, fire retardants, diesal, special effects, film industry, ( theatre cutains ) plaster walls, drylining, pharmacutical drugs, fibres, ect ect, you will not want to get out of bed in the morning. Your daily diet contains more carciogens I believe. Also where intolerance leads to. "

" to: TO Costanza -- pollutants are harmful whether inside or outside. But would you rather be locked in a garage with a running car or standing next to one outside? Its only logical that the pollutants would be more concentrated in an enclosed area. Common sense. "

" So it's okay to pollute the air that you breathe when you are walking outside, just as long as the air isn't polluted when you are sitting in an enclosed area? Sounds like you are just terribly worried about health concerns. By the way, I don't smoke. "

KrisB wrote on Nov 22, 2006 4:00 AM:

" I totally agree. We allow people to take on jobs with massive risk, police, fire, rescue services, armed forces and many more yet we do not allow someone the choice of working in or entering a bar where people smoke. Despite protestations from Repace and other anti-smokers there are plenty of ventilation options that can clear the worst of the smoke and even a plasma-cluster technology that cheaply removes almost 100% of polution. Removing freedom of chuice and imposing exclusion on a large proportion of the population will cause more misery and death than secondhand smoke is blamed for. It's time to get things into proportion. Smoking kills many smokers but an estimated, theoretical death rate of 2.5 in 100,000 attributed to SHS is insufficient reason to impose smoking bans upon places where people choose to go (or not). Partial bans work but, as in Ireland and Scotland, there is evidence that falling smoking rates stall or even go into reverse. "
