Roundup of Pantagraph-area boys basketball games played Nov. 25

At Gibson City

Casey Cline scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to pace Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School’s basketball team to a 58-42 victory over Blue Ridge Saturday night in the championship game of the Falcon Invitational at Gibson City.

Cody Birky added 14 points for GCMS (3-1), while Justin Bleich scored nine points and handed 14 rebounds.

The Falcons made 23 of 32 free throws compared to 12 of 17 accuracy for Blue Ridge (3-1).

The Knights were led by Brad Wells with 17 points and Jonathon Cox with 16.

Tri-Point 76, Armstrong 72: Senior Ian Conkling scored 24 points as Tri-Point slipped past Armstrong-Potomac in overtime to capture third place.

Jason Wright added 18 points, Scott Gleeson scored 15 and Troy Moritz had 11 for Tri-Point (2-2).

The Chargers won the game at the free-throw line, making 17 of 24 attempts to Armstrong-Potomac’s 7 of 8.

Conkling and Moritz made the all-tournament team along with Blue Ridge’s Wells, GCMS’ Birky and Brent Markwalder of Armstrong-Potomac (0-4).

At Chillicothe

Eureka 77, Midland 47: Dean Eastman and Jordan Prosser netted 14 points apiece as Eureka ran past Midland to capture the title at the IVC Thanksgiving Tournament.

Eureka, which finished the tourney 3-0, never looked back after racing to a 26-14 lead in the opening quarter. Colin Knapp added 12 points for the Hornets, who extended the margin to 44-21 by halftime and 64-35 by the end of the third period.

“Everyone played well,’’ said Eureka coach Tim Meiss.

Eastman also collected a team-high seven rebounds for the Hornets, who last won this tournament in 2003. Chad Blunier chipped in with a team-high six assists.

Matt Strong paced Midland (0-3) with 14 points. Zach Bogner had 10.

Eureka 53, IVC 45: Eastman netted a game-high 20 points and Prosser and Blunier added 12 and 10, respectively, as Eureka downed the host school in earlier action.

“It was a tight game all the way,’’ said Meiss. “We rebounded well in the second half.”

Eastman handled a team-high 11 rebounds while Prosser collected 10 boards for the Hornets, who managed a 36-24 rebound advantage. Colin Knapp dished out a team-high seven assist to go with four points.

Eureka held leads of 30-27 at halftime and 40-35 entering the fourth quarter.

IVC (1-1) was led by Josh Parr and Billy Seiler with 13 points each.

At Stanford

Olympia 62, Roanoke-Benson 60: Matt Frahm scored 29 points as Olympia slipped past Roanoke-Benson in double overtime.

The outcome left Olympia, Roanoke-Benson and Heyworth with 2-1 tournament records. Roanoke-Benson won the title on the basis of fewest points allowed, with Olympia second and Heyworth third. LeRoy (0-3) placed fourth.

Nick Janssen had 24 points to pace Roanoke-Benson, while Tyler Rasmuson added 16.

“For three quarters we played about as well as can be expected given we are very young,” Olympia coach Gerry Thornton said. “Somehow we found a way to win even after losing our only two experienced players (Frahm and Colt Stroud) to foul trouble.”

Roanoke-Benson 58, LeRoy 33: Randall Koehler paced a balanced scoring attack with 10 points and Roanoke-Benson used a big second quarter to pull away to victory.

Max Huschen added nine points for Roanoke-Benson. Rasmuson had eight while Brant Janssen and Sam Durley chipped in seven apiece.

The Rockets, who led 18-9 after the opening quarter, blitzed LeRoy with a 24-5 run in the second period to take a commanding 42-14 advantage by halftime. Durley netted all seven of his points in the quarter while Koehler and Rasmuson had six each to fuel the surge.

Brent Alexander paced LeRoy with 10 points.

Heyworth 42, Olympia 41: Nick Kronmiller netted nine of his team-high 12 points in the second half as Heyworth (1-1) rallied to edge host Olympia.

Heyworth trailed 17-15 at halftime before seven third quarter points by Kronmiller helped the Hornets take a 29-27 lead.

Zach Gooden scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter and the Hornets sank all four of their free throw attempts in the final period to seal the win. Nick Law added 10 points.

Junior Colt Stroud had a game-high 14 points to lead Olympia. Trevor Strubhar added 10 points while Frahm had nine.

At South Streator

Woodland 52, Paw Paw 47: Brian Council had team highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Warriors as Woodland defeated Paw Paw to win the championship of the Woodland Warrior Classic.

The Warriors (4-0) trailed 26-22 at the half and 34-33 after three periods before outscoring Paw Paw 19-13 in the fourth quarter.

Jake Reynero added 14 points for Woodland while Kyle DePoister had seven assists.

Woodland 64, Ohio 38: Reynoro scored 18 points to lead the Warriors to victory over Ohio in the first game Saturday.

Woodland led 12-11 after one period and 30-21 at the half before outscoring Ohio 15-10 in the third period to take a comfortable 45-31 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

DePoister added 13 points and four steals for the Warriors while Council had 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

At Ottawa

Ottawa 52, Pontiac 50: The host Pirates rallied from an 11-point deficit with 4½ minutes remaining to claim the victory in the Ottawa Tournament.

Kevin Lyons collected a game-high 21 points and six assists for Ottawa (1-2), which missed its last four free throws. Kody Strong added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Pirates.

Atlee Stalker and Mike Park both had 13 points to pace Ottawa.

At Lincoln

Lincoln 48, Danville 33: Senior guard Brandon Farmer tossed in a game-high 24 points and collected seven rebounds to lead Lincoln (3-1) past Danville in early action at the Lincoln Tournament.

Lincoln, which shot 50 percent (18 of 36) from the floor held leads of 27-13 at halftime and 38-27 after three quarters. Alex Anderson added seven points for the Railsplitters while Matt Schick contributed five points, seven boards and four assists.

Stanley Tyler paced Danville with nine points.

At Athens

Illini Central 60, Beardstown 24: Senior guard Drew Kastner scored a game-high 20 points, including five 3-point baskets, to lead Illini Central to an easy victory over Beardstown on the fourth day of action at the Athens Classic.

Kastner had 14 of his 20 points in the third quarter as the Cougars outscored Beardstown 26-10 in the period to stretch a 32-14 halftime lead to a comfortable 58-24 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Landon Frye added nine points for Illini Central, while senior guard Alex Adams finished with eight.

At Hoopeston

Fisher 49, Iroquois West 46: Sam Estes scored 13 points and Mitch Elkins added 12 to lead the Bunnies as Fisher improved to 4-0 in tournament play on the final day of action at the Cornjerker Classic.

Fisher had leads of 16-10 after one period, 25-19 at the half and 39-30 after three quarters before Iroquois West rallied but fell short, outscoring the Bunnies 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

“Every time we made a run, they hit a big shot,” said Iroquois West coach Matt Honeycutt. “Give Fisher credit. When it looked like we were getting momentum, they had four different guys knock 3-pointers. And once again, we didn’t do ourselves any favors at the free throw line.”

Scott Dietz finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Iroquois West, while Kyle White had 12 points and three assists. Luke Lustfeldt added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders. Neil Hollingsworth grabbed six rebounds.

Iroquois West 66, Milford 59: Lustfeldt scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead Iroquois West past Milford to finish 2-2 in tournament play.

It was a game of momentum as Milford (1-3) outscored Iroquois West 24-9 in the second period to take a 31-20 halftime lead. The Raiders rallied in the second half and pulled to within 47-39 heading to the fourth quarter, before outscoring Milford 27-12 in the final period.

White added 15 points for Iroquois West, while Hollingsworth reached double figures with 10. Ryan Alvarez finished with nine points and six assists. Dietz had eight points and seven rebounds.

“Our defense won this one for us in the fourth quarter,” said Honeycutt. “We turned that into offense and that’s what keyed the win. This was a solid come-from-behind win.”

At Clifton

PBL 64, Clifton Central 56: Tyler Overstreet sank four free throws in the final minute as PBL (1-3) earned its first victory with a win in the seventh-place game of the Interstate Classic.

Overstreet finished with 19 points while Kendall Cox added a game-high 22 points for PBL. The Panthers built leads of 36-18 by halftime and 47-31 by the end of the third quarter before fending off a late rally by Clifton Central (0-4).

PBL made 25 of 36 free throws in the contest compared to 23 of 38 for Clifton Central.
