Blue Ridge parents to view child's progress easier
FARMER CITY -- Parents in the Blue Ridge School District soon will be able to monitor their child’s progress in school more closely. Starting Friday for grades 7 to 12 and Jan. 4 for grades 1 to 6, parents will be able to access student information 24 hours a day via the Internet. “Family Access” is a Web-based tool designed to improve communication between parents and the school district. “The reason we purchased (the software system) was to give parents the ability to become more connected with their students, more connected with the school,” said Blue Ridge Superintendent Jay Harnack. Family Access allows parents to view the most up-to-date information about their students’ grades, assignments, fees, and attendance. E-mail links to teachers are also provided. Parents can access the site using an assigned user name and password. “We’re so interconnected now if parents want to get information from a teacher it’s much easier than it used to be already. This just provides them with more specific and direct information,” Harnack said. The district is offering training sessions at 6 p.m. today at the Mansfield Elementary gym and at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Blue Ridge High School commons. Parents can fill out a form to request a user name and password at the training session or in the high school office. The district will provide that information via e-mail or in person at the office. Harnack said the program is great for parents who want to keep track of how their child is doing in school. “It used to be, the conduit for that information really was the child. Now the conduit is the school,” he said. He also pointed out it’s convenient for parents who frequently travel for work or aren’t available during school hours. Harnack said disciplinary action will not be included in the system. “We have that option, but we’re choosing at this time not to exercise that option because we still want to have that interpersonal communication with the teachers and the administrator,” Harnack said. Eventually, Harnack said, the district would like to be able to offer online registration. |
