How the top 12 rank on 'American Idol'
At last, "American Idol" has its top 12 finalists for season 6. Going into the last leg of Fox's top-rated singing competition, here's how I'd rank them. Feelings are sure to change once they have to start singing under each week's mandated theme, which begins Tuesday night with a Diana Ross cavalcade. 1. Lakisha Jones: The early favorite with a huge voice needs to show that she can tone it down when needed — unlike similar past contestants Jennifer Hudson and Mandisa . 2. Melinda Doolittle: The spunky longtime backup singer always seems to be on. 3. Jordin Sparks: She's young and raw, but seems to improve each week — a dark-horse candidate to win it all. 4. Blake Lewis: Another dark horse, he has a hip, now sound, but must remember that singing, not beat-boxing, is what it's all about. 5. Stephanie Edwards: She's immensely talented, but can sound shrill at times, which will probably prove her ultimate undoing. 6. Chris Sligh: The big-haired lug is hard to peg. He'll go sooner if he lets his feisty side peek through, as he did a few weeks ago, but he can sing. 7. Gina Glocksen: Finally, a bona-fide female rocker! Unfortunately, her voice isn't always up to the task. 8. Phil Stacey: The bald Navy guy has grand moments that quickly vanish with so-so outings — probably too inconsistent to go far. 9. Chris Richardson: His contemporary stylings have so far masked that his vocals lack power. 10. Brandon Rogers: He has sung backup for Christina Aguilera — way back, I hope. 11. Sanjaya Malakar: Hair: sleek. Mood: meek. Voice: weak. Stage presence: eek! 12. Haley Scarnato: There's no charisma to back up her -sometimes-pretty voice — ultimately forgettable. Near misses: Among the contestants cut last week, Sundance Head and Jared Cotter should have made the top 12 over Malakar and Rogers — although, admittedly, neither would have gone far. Sabrina Sloan was a no-brainer pick over Scarnato, but voting viewers obviously had a problem with something other than talent. Antonella Barba was a week overdue for the boot.
