Time for the rights -- and rites -- of spring
The countdown to the Final Four is on, and March Madness consumes us. Watching basketball has become our rights of spring. But things are moving so fast, I get them confused. For a while I had Anna Nicole Smith mixed up with Nicole Brown Simpson. I assumed that O.J. had moved to the Bahamas. Hillary Clinton compared herself to John Kennedy in having to break down barriers. Most people find a greater resemblance with Kennedy in Bill. Scooter Libby seems to resemble G. Gordon Liddy, the architect of Watergate. He too refused to talk. President Bush received tumultuous greetings in South America. He went to discuss ethanol with friendly Brazil. Yet our tariff is so high they can't export to us. But we buy millions of barrels of oil from unfriendly Venezuela. Barack Obama spoke at the African Methodist Church where the voting rights march began in 1965. Simultaneously, Hillary spoke to a nearby Baptist congregation. The two seem to be singing that duet: ``Anything you can do, I can do better.'' While the jury in Libby's case believed him guilty of perjury, they also felt he was the fall guy for higher-ups. One thing you can say for Karl Rove. He's a survivor. In that other city of make-believe - Hollywood, Al Gore won an Oscar. As of yet, the Supreme Court has not taken it away from him. Vice President Cheney flew great lengths to avoid testifying and developed thrombosis. You don't need to fly around the world to get a blood clot. Jet Blue can give you one just sitting on the tarmac. Historians have become fascinated by Cheney's performance. One said that of all the vice presidents in history, Cheney has become the most interesting. That assessment includes, I believe, Spiro Agnew. Bill Linneman Normal |
