Swimming



Applegate gets six awards

Pontiac High School graduate Tom Applegate won six all-American awards recently at the Division II men’s swimming national meet in Buffalo, N.Y.. His effort was part of helping the Truman State Bulldogs to a 13-place finish.

Five of Applegate’s awards came as part of Bulldog relay teams. They had their strongest performance in the 200 freestyle relay, on which Applegate swam the lead leg. The team finished fifth with a time of 1 minute, 23.51 seconds.

Applegate was the only Truman State swimmer to compete in an individual finals heat, placing 13th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.28.

Applegate was the first swimmer from Pontiac to reach the Illinois high state swim meet.

Basketball



Heydorn named all-region

Illinois Wesleyan basketball player Mallory Heydorn has been named to the second team of the all-Central Region team. The sophomore averaged 17.1 points per game and set a single-season school record with 85 3-pointers for the Titans who reached the Division III tournament.

Chismark earns honor

Normal West High School graduate Stan Chismark has been named an honorable mention selection to the NAIA all-American team after averaging 16.7 points per game for Olivet Nazarene University.

Chismark, a senior, finished his college career with 1,433 points, which ranks 14th in school history.

Football



Selzer signs with McKendree

Bobby Selzer, a wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner at Central Catholic High School, has signed a letter of intent to continue his football career at McKendree College.

Selzer had 33 receptions for 700 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He also made 62 solo tackles, recovered three fumbles and had an interception. He also was named all-conference in the Corn Belt.

Tarpley all-district

Eureka College forward Chris Tarpley has been named to the NCAA Division III Midwest all-district men’s second team as named by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

A senior from Pekin, Ill., Tarpley had received accolades for St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, SLIAC All-Tournament, SLIAC Player of the Week (twice), D3hoops.com All-Region and team MVP. He helped the Red Devils to a 12-game improvement as the team finished 16-10. He averaged 18.9 points and 10 rebounds per game this season, recording 11 double-doubles and scoring at least 10 points in all but one game.

Tarpley led the SLIAC in rebounds with 260, the fourth-highest in school history.
