AirTran to offer direct flights from Bloomington to Vegas
Service to compete with Peoria airport
BLOOMINGTON — Mark your calendars for a trip to Sin City. AirTran Airways announced Wednesday it will offer four flights a week from Bloomington’s Central Illinois Regional Airport to the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas beginning Aug. 15. Fares start at $109 each way. “Las Vegas is both a business and leisure destination,” said CIRA Executive Director Carl Olson. “It’s a hotspot for tourism, but it’s also a top business destination because of all of the trade shows.” Airport officials have tried to snag a westbound flight for years, targeting Phoenix, Denver or Salt Lake City because those destinations best serve the business travel of State Farm Insurance Cos., Country Insurance & Financial Services, Afni Inc. and Mitsubishi Motors North America, among other companies. Last fall, CIRA lost $850,000 in federal dollars that would have subsidized those flights when it failed to attract an airline before the grant expired. The airport continues to look for a daily westbound flight for business travelers, Olson said. Officials want service to a hub location that would allow people to make easy connections throughout the western U.S. The Las Vegas service, meanwhile, is more of a destination than a hub but was an offer “we just couldn’t refuse,” he said. The service will compete directly with the Greater Peoria Regional Airport, which offers flights to and from Las Vegas six days a week via Allegiant Air. Allegiant announced last month that it would boost that service from six to eight flights per week from June 11 to Aug. 8. “It’s a very popular destination for Peoria,” said Ken Spirito, Peoria’s director of airports. He wouldn’t discuss specific passenger counts on those flights but said Central Illinois can support the added service. “There’s certainly enough population to support nonstop service to many areas,” he said. Traci Oman, manager of the AAA Travel Agency offices in Bloomington and Champaign, agreed. “We needed something like this,” she said. “I think this is going to be really good for Bloomington, and we’ll support it.” AirTran, one of the longest-serving airlines in Bloomington, also flies from CIRA to Atlanta, Ga. and Orlando, Fla. Spokeswoman Judy Graham-Weaver said the airline has considered expanding to Las Vegas for quite a while. “Las Vegas is a destination — no matter where we offer the service — that seems to fill up quickly,” she said, noting that AirTran is also adding service to Las Vegas from the Quad City International Airport in Moline. The addition of service to Sin City also marks the largest aircraft regularly departing the Bloomington airport, Olson said. AirTran plans to use 137-seat jets. The largest aircraft currently serving the airport seats 117 people, he said. CIRA also offers service to Chicago and Detroit. |
