Gas prices jump in Twin Cities
Advertisement

BLOOMINGTON -- Gas prices are creeping closer to $3 a gallon in the Twin Cities.

Unleaded jumped from $2.69 a gallon to $2.89 at some Twin City stations Thursday afternoon. Prices also jumped to $2.85 a gallon late last week, before falling down a few days later.

“We think that we’re seeing the highs of it now,” said Beth Mosher of AAA-Chicago Motor Club, which tracks statewide gas prices. “Not that prices won’t go up more, but we typically see prices go up in the spring and then come back down.”

Prices generally increase this time of year as refiners start producing more expensive summer blends of gaso-line to cut emissions, she said. Some refiners also perform general maintenance of their facilities during the spring, which slows output.

Gasoline first topped $3 a gallon after Hurricane Katrina disrupted Gulf Coast oil refineries in 2005. It hit the $3 mark again in mid-summer 2005 and appears headed in that direction again.

With the summer driving season just around the corner, people continue to travel despite unseasonably cold weather. Gasoline consumption is 2.5 percent higher than it was last year at this time, according to a report re-leased Wednesday by the Energy Information Administration in Washington D.C.

That demand is leading to steady increases at the pump, as the average cost of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. has risen for 10 consecutive weeks, the agency reported. At an average of $2.80 per gallon at the end of last week, gas is nearly 12 cents more expensive than it was at this time last year.

Prices were also up in Peoria, Champaign-Urbana, Springfield and other Central Illinois towns, according to motorists who report gasoline prices at www.illinoisgasprices.com.

" Politicians do not produce oil. The only thing they do is obstruct production for various reasons. Some good some bad. Gas prices at 3.00 a gallon adjusted for inflation is considerably less then prices of 1.75 and 2.50 that we saw during the last democratic administrations. Blame the President, Blame the Station owners, later this summer you can blame the farmers for high food prices. Just remember, when you look in any parking lot in this town, 50% of the vehicles are SUVs or trucks. 90% of those have only one occupant. I wonder when people will feel the shame of this lack of regard for our country and our environment. "

" That GW is being blamed for gas price increases. Our reliance on foreign oil goes back well before his time. He has tried initiatives to lower our dependence on foreign oil. However, to do so, we need to develop other fuels such as bio-diesel, etc. In the meantime, we need to drill here and have refineries here. However, the tree huggers won't allow it. As for others blaming Bush's stance on Iran, I forgot it is his fault that a person who wishes to eliminate Israel and the west was elected President and threatens peace. People really need to wake up. "

" So you're saying we should be willing to accept the same prices Europeans pay? I disagree. We "lazy spoon-fed Amerians" (who are more productive than Europeans) don't have to settle for European wages and standards of living. For the same reason, we shouldn't have to accept their gas prices. You don't have to ask government to mandate more efficient cars to reduce demand of oil. By simply increasing the supply (more drilling), prices will go down. "

" For the record, when Europeans pay $6+ gallon for gas, its mostly tax. The tax goes to fund evil socialist programs like health care, universal college educations, and decent public transportation. If our gas prices ever get that high, we should be grateful that it is going into the pocket of an oil exec, rather than into evil socialist programs that might improve the United States. "

" It took about 2 or 3 months before prices to start going back up. When gas hit $1.92/gallon, the Democrats had already won. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if the oil companies were trying to help their Republican friends, but they couldn't make it too obvious. "

BN Cynic wrote on Apr 13, 2007 8:54 AM:

" Actually, if Bush wanted to help lower the price of gas, he could stop saber rattling with Iran. Oil investors and speculators are worried that crazy 'ol George will try to "liberate" Iran. When a nation is "liberated", its oil production drops to nothing. From Econ 101, what happens when the supply drops but the demand remains the same? The price goes up! The speculators are betting that we'll be liberating Iran soon, so we have high prices. "

" Nothing is going to change until, we the people demand more efficient gas millage from our auto makers. The oil companies are subsidised by our goverment right now, handed millinons if not billions of dollars a year to keep gas prices artificialy low. Look across the atlantic and see what they pay and you understand why the all drive tiny little cars. they can't afford to drive ther H2's over there. while your at it compare gasoline to milk, there is only so much oil in the ground but plenty of cows yet they cost about the same per gallon! " While "Zorro" made some valid arguments, I think Bloomington-Normal retailers are guilty of collusion. About two years ago this area had the lowest gas prices in the state. As a frequent in-state traveler, I was always relieved to know that gas would less expensive when I returned home. During Super Bowl weekend I was in the Chicago area and gas in the south suburbs was less than B-N. Gas in the city was about three to five cents more. WTF? "

" Anyone else sick of the blatant price gouging going on in this town by local gas stations? Every State Farm payweek, the gas prices shoot up. This is a Bloomington/Normal phenomenon only. Surrounding areas are not affected. I would love it if the stations in this town that did that were boycotted. "

" Quit, whining, you know how much gas costs in other countries? Upwards of 8 dollars a gallon. Do you think that if it hit that price around here, we lazy spoon fed Americans would get off our butts and insist the government do something to force the car companies to increase the mileage of our vehicles? They have the technology they choose not to use it. My Dad is 77 he remembers when vehicles still got 40 miles to he gallon. Or, here is an idea quit buying the freaking SUVs. I have a big family and I still drive a car! Do you really need a H2 Hummer? " Finally we see some coverage on fuel prices rising. Since the Democrats won the house and senate gas prices started rising immediately (not that the Democrats had anything to do with that) but, when the Republicans had majority control, it was all their fault. The mainstream leftwing media and the Democracts (who are all one big party together) were constantly whining about high fuel prices. Even though they are the party who loves huge taxes and high fuel prices to punish all us great big fat horrible SUV driving Americans! Haven't heard anything about it on the network or cable news channels....You know the ones who hate America too. Alternative fules are very necessary to get us off of foreign oil, but in the mean time exploration off the coasts would be so helpful, but the leftist environmentalist whackos won't let it happen, so.......here we go again with another summer rip-off season. If we are to have lower gas prices this summer our daily imports of gas need to rise and the refineries need to avoid their (planned) fires and glitches to a minimum. "

" My friends, gasoline prices are outrageously high because of consumer demand. It is no different than anyother consumer product. As long as the consumer is willing to pay the high prices, there is NO reason for those prices to moderate. We can blame State Farm, GW Bush, oil companies, or the phase of the moon. The bottom line is we must cut consumption over a long period of time, and we seem to be unwilling to do that. Until that happens expect gas prices to rise to a level of what ever the market will bear. It's simple economics, that have been taught in schools for years. Although it would seem that Unit 5, uses a different economic model. "
