Sipes breaks two records as BHS defends Intercity title
BLOOMINGTON - This week's race of the century didn't take place, but it appears Tyler Sipes doesn't need a rival to roast a set of 300-meter intermediate hurdles. The Bloomington High School sensation didn't face defending champion Preston Smith of University High, who ran the 400 instead in the Intercity Meet on Tuesday at Fred Carlton Field. It didn't matter, though, as Sipes posted the No. 2 time in Pantagraph area history at 38.5 seconds. That school record was his second meet record following a 14.6 scorcher in the 110 high hurdles. His efforts helped BHS defend its title with 104 points. Normal Community took second (91) followed by Normal West (86), Central Catholic (50) and U High (41). Other meet marks fell to Blain Peckmann of NCHS in the pole vault at 14 feet, 11 inches and NCHS in the 800 relay (1:30.1). "Tyler Sipes has just had a terrific spring," said John Szabo after picking up his 21st Intercity crown in 25 years as BHS coach. "The other kid who really had a heck of a day was Justin Bocot." Bocot, a Southern Illinois basketball recruit out for track for the first time since his freshman year, won the high jump with a season best of 6 feet, 2 inches and placed second in the long jump at 20-9. Bocot also ran on the runner-up 800 relay (1:30.1), which also dipped under the previous meet record of 1:31.8 set by BHS 18 years ago. "He's a leader and a competitor and it showed today," Szabo said. Sipes showed the 1989 area record of 38.3 in the 300s by Pontiac's Chris Fowler may not last much longer and he knows where to save time. "The first half is what I've got to get down," Sipes said. "I always go over (the hurdles) with the wrong leg." Sipes broke Smith's meet record of 39.8 as Smith, who lost to Sipes last week, chose to run the 400 in which he won in an area-leading 50.4. "Me and my coach decided since Tyler one upped me last Tuesday, we'd wait until May (for a rematch) and get him back then," Smith said. Sipes' high hurdle time broke the meet mark of 14.9 set by Normal West's Brad Baker in 1997 and tied by Tyler Neal of BHS in 2001. "It was my slowest second half of the race this year, maybe because of the wind," said Sipes, whose best is 14.3. Peckmann, an Illinois-Chicago recruit, added one inch to the meet pole vault record set by Corey Christenson of U High in 1992. Peckmann almost made 15-3. "I landed on the mat and the bar was still wobbling, and it wobbled right off," he said. Maxim Bakana's hopes for an NCHS win in the 800 relay were teetering as Darian Davis of BHS closed with a rush. Bakana's lean was enough for the win and the No. 9 time in area history. "The last 50 meters I heard everybody yelling so that's how I knew he was coming," said Bakana, whose relay partners were Brent Ross, Alex Martin and Melvin Hicks. Bakana also won the long jump with a last attempt of 20-10½ and defended his triple jump title with a first try of 46-3, a mark only eight others in area history have managed. The Purple Raiders' Davis, a junior, won his third title in the 200 in 22.4 after earlier winning the 100 in 11.2 into a headwind. "Everybody ran slow times," he said. "I took it out kind of slow (in the 200), but I finished decent. I'm out of shape. By the end of the season, I'll be fine." Central Catholic's Josh Brent became the meet's first four-time shot put champion at 52-6½. He finished well ahead of the school record 48-9¾ by runner-up Max Wiese of Normal West, but well short of his school record of 57-1. Brent warmed up by winning his first Intercity discus crown with a school record of 162-9. "The discus has been coming around for me this year because my weight has been consistently at 305 to 307," he said. "Last year I was constantly gaining weight and my balance was continually off." Rounding out the double winners was Duke-recruit Cory Nanni of Normal West, who defended his 1,600 crown in 4:29.8 after earlier winning the 3,200 in 9:35.1. "The 3,200 I wasn't too happy about," said Nanni, who wanted the meet record of 9:28.8. "I don't know what happened. I just slowed down." Nanni sped up to give his winning 1,600 relay (3:27.9) a 51.6 split. Joining him were Brant Basting (52.9), Jonny Kaufmann (52.9) and Reid Basting (50.6). Brant Basting earlier outleaned Ben Nathan of BHS in the 800 as both clocked 1:59.7. Brant Basting began his day with a 2:00.3 anchor leg on the winning 3,200 relay (8:12.2). Preceding him were Jesse Holliger (2:02.5), Matt Sullivan (2:04.2) and Steve Ross (2:04.5). Central Catholic's 400 relay continued its school record setting ways with a winning 43.3 thanks to Javier Safford, Ryan Waldron, Mark Lello and Aaron Bivins. It was Central's second relay win in meet history following last year's triumph in the 800. The Saints' runner-up 3,200 relay (8:15.2) set a school record thanks to Michael Fay (2:05.5), Austin Quinn (2:04.7), Derek Haas (2:03.0) and Dan Curran (2:01.4).
