Durbin has broad definition of 'local'

I was rather amused by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's Earth Day comments as reported in the Pantagraph regarding the positive ``local'' economic impact of the wind farm east of town.

Are not the towers designed and built in Germany, most the construction workers who assembled them from outside McLean County, the electricity transmitted to Chicagoland and the power company who owns the operation from Texas - until recently when Horizon Wind Energy was contracted to be sold to a Portuguese utility?

It seems, as with the meaning of many words, ``local'' may have a different definition in Washington than in Central Illinois.

The senator is correct that some locals are making money out of the project. The folks who allowed the towers on their farms are reported to be receiving the extraordinary income of about $5,000 per year per tower for placement of a windmill which generates electricity worth millions of dollars each year.

Also, as The Merna Tap was overrun by the wind farm construction guys the last time I visited, the local beer business must be good.

" I agree that taxpayers should not be footing the bill for businesses, unless of course taxpayers will make a profit as an investor. Anyway, taxpayers should have the right to choose what they want to invest in and should consider how it would affect our residents or community in the long run. I don't think Chicago cares about our dilemma. They just want their extra energy. "

Whose Rights More Important? wrote on May 9, 2007 11:07 AM:

" There was testimony at the McLean County ZBA that wind turbines on a neighbor's property will prevent the farmer from obtaining crop protection on his land. The right to have a turbine on one's property ends when it violates the rights of others to continue using their property. It ends when the taxpayers of the entire county will pick up the tab for the damaged roads, erosion, run off and astronomical costs of decommissioning. It ends when people have to move from their homes for their own health to escape the constant noise and light pollution. Taxpayers are footing the bill for the astronomical tax credits and "incentives" given to the companies to locate here, including the production plant at Clinton. This industry is propped up by tax money - it is not economically viable without it. It's an Enron-esque scam. "

" You talk about "the diminished ability to farm around these atrocities" . Last I saw this was not a facist country and none of the wind turbines were forced down anybody's throat. They chose to have the turbine on their land and if there is a "diminished ability to farm" they understood that going in. You seem to be one of the short sighted ones who think oil is going to last forever. "

" Amazing how short-sighted our local officials are - hurray, a couple restaurants will have an increase in business from all those out of town and out of state construction workers. Who will be paying for the loss in property values, the diminished ability to farm around these atrocities, the extreme noise and light pollution and the destruction of the community of Ellsworth. Great deal - we all pay more on our electric bill for a crappy form of electricity that will be going to Chicago but will still cause massive brownouts locally......great deal. "

" Dick Durbin has a broad defination of a lot of things. I would not trust that man if he told me sky was blue and grass was green. I would insist on checking personally. But he is a politician, and this is what they do. He makes sure that he says something all the time so he stays in the papers, and gets name recognition. Good, bad, or otherwise, he gets free advertizing. "

" the wind farms have had an *incredibly positive* impact on the surrounding local businesses- especially service industries such as restaurants and bars- which are getting a sorely needed boost in business in these sad economic times. maybe if mr. abbey bothered to visit and talk with the business owners, he might have a basis to form a reasonable opinion. i also appreciate the irony of his "local concern" from all the way down there in florida. "

" Most of the construction workers were from central Illinois as they were from the local unions. Some management and bosses were not local but not close to "most". It seems, as with the meaning of many words, "most'' may have a different definition in St. Petersburg, Florida than in Central Illinois. I just took a trip to Wisconsin this past weekend and saw several wind farms. I would much rather have to look at the wind towers rather the cell phone towers plus, the wind towers are actually doing some good. And just to be clear, I will only have a cell phone if someone tosses one in my casket at my visitation. "
