Trial delayed for minister accused of sex abuse

BLOOMINGTON -- A 37-year-old substitute teacher and minister won’t go to trial next week on accusations he sedated and sexually abused four teen boys at his home.

James C. Love was scheduled for trial July 16 on four counts of aggravated battery and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The accusations involve alleged incidents at Love’s home earlier this year.

Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Brooks said she was still waiting for DNA results in one of the cases against Love. Defense attorney Steve Skelton said he hasn’t been given copies of recordings of Love’s calls from the jail and interviews with police.

Judge Kevin Fitzgerald vacated the trial date and scheduled a status hearing for Aug. 21.

Love, who carried a red Bible in his right hand to and from the bench, remained silent during the proceedings. About 10 supporters left the courtroom after his hearing ended.

In the last five years before his arrest, Love was a volunteer and later a paid substitute teacher. He also has served as a minister at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

Love remains in jail in lieu of paying $40,000.

" Sad that we live in a society where realism has been demoted to pessimism, as is apparent in my detractors "glass is half empty" statement. I never said that most people are evil, I simply said that many of those who are evil wrap themselves in garb that make others less suspicious. That's why whenever a serial killer is caught, the people who knew them usually are shocked and make comments like "he seemed like a nice, normal guy". I'm sure there are exceptions, but you can't deny it happens a lot. "

" You must be a lot of fun at parties with your "glass half empty" approach to life. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I still believe the most people are genuinely good by nature, but those people don't make headlines.....and I take this approach to life even being a parent of one of Jon White's students when he got released at Colene Hoose back in March of 2005! "

" I in no way know whether this guy is guilty or not, but I do know that people are way too trusting with their children when someone claims to be a "good Christian", and way too slow to acknowledge that something wrong may be afoot for the same reason. Time to get a clue, people. Just because someone presents themselves as pious doesn't mean they are. In fact, there are many people who use this front as a means for deceiving others and covering up their misdeeds. Catholic priest scandal, anyone? BTK killer, anyone? People who believe otherwise could use a little more...cynicism. "

" I am beginning to think he dropped Pelo because of the financial aspect. Look at the Springfield attys who quit when financial issues arose in the Pelo case. I am not surprised that this trial got a postponement at all. They want to have all the evidence ready so there is no chance on an appeal to say evidence was witheld. "

" It seems funny that the attorney Steve Skelton dropped the case for pelo, the cop accused of rape and home invasion. Saying that he had health problems. And now he is on this case. Neither one of which has gone to trial yet. So how can he do this trial and not Pelo's? "
