Man beaten by would-be burglars in Normal
Advertisement

NORMAL -- A man who heard a noise in an apartment bedroom found the leg of an intruder coming through a window and grabbed it, only to be assaulted by the man after they both fell out of the window, a Normal police report said.

The victim was hit three or four times in the face by the intruder and a few other men with him outside the first-floor window about 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of South University Street, police said.

The victim had lacerations to his face and his friends took him for medical treatment, police said.

A group was in the apartment playing a game when the victim heard the noise.

The others couldn’t find the victim after going to check on him, but later found him outside the window.

The suspects were apparently trying to break in, police said. Nothing was found stolen.

" WHAT SHOOTINGS ALL YOU GUYS ARE HEARING STUFF. IF ALL THESE SHOOTINGS ARE TAKING PLACE WHY IS NOBODY GETTING SHOT. AND THATS ANOTHER PROBLEM ONE GUY HAD A GUN, AND THE WHOLE FORCE SHOWS UP WITH K-9 BLOCKS OFF THE STREET AND STILL CANT FIND THE GUY. STOP MAKING PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEIR IS INCREASED VIOLENCE CAUSE ITS NOT TRUE!!!! THIS IS THE REASON WHY CERTAIN AREAS (WESTSIDE) AND PEOPLE(YOU ALL KNOW WHO) ARE WATCHED AND HARASSED OVER THESE BOGUS COMPLAINTS!!! "

" If you don't want to arm yourself with a gun, at least keep a bat handy. The perp sticking his leg through the window should have at the very least had his shin broken. His pals could have carried him the the car or ER. "

" You brought this up in another topic, chiefly the puzzling "why would a thug bother robbing someone for ~ONLY~ $10?" Ummm... do you think they ASK their victim first?? I would wager 99% of the criminals just say "stick em' up" and then take what they get. I'm sure they're pretty disappointed that the pickings are NOT MORE. Maybe people should carry large easy-to-read placards, front and back, that read "I carry no more than $10 in cash after 6pm" or "I lost everything in the divorce, so I might just be hitting YOU up for some cash"? LOL... Sorry, but I found your comments unintentionally (I'm sure... Right?) hilarious. To think that a thug, finding his mark with only $3 in his/her pocket, might say something like, "Maaaan, I's sorry. I just be on my way now, aiiight?"is precious. I WISH that WERE the case, instead of reality (where they often beat to death the victim BECAUSE he/she didn't have more money on them). "

" If someone is climbing through my window he would hear the bolt slam on my 12 gauge shotgun once he stepped in. His choices would then be to lie down and wait for the police or act stupidly and get picked up by the coroner. Either way I wouldn't be the victim. "

Bitter irony wrote on Aug 10, 2007 11:56 AM:

" When I went to college at ISU Chicagoans mockingly called Normal a backwoods hicktown. Some Normalites were made to feel inferior. The bitter irony is as Normal has grown this type of crime seems to be part of the price of becoming more "citified." Being a hicktown is not altogether bad. It has not been that long ago Normalites left their windows and doors open 24/7. "

" To To I Wonder: I live off Orlando, do you know what date/time that happened? I must have slept through it or was at work. I know Orlando St. has a bad rep but I have lived in the neighborhood for 4.5 years and other than littering and people walking in the middle of the street instead of the sidewalks w/their kids, I have not experienced anything that would make me nervous - except for your comment! Yikes! Normal PD does a GREAT job of patrolling the neighborhood and it is very much appreciated by MOST of the people in the neighborhood. "

" I'm not sure about his/her statement about the other night, but I do work off of Orlando and last week there was a man with a gun chasing a woman down the street. 6 units (including k-9) responded and had the block sectioned off. They got the woman, but couldn't find the man (we were informed of the details by a co-workers husband who is an officer.) and yet I see nothing in the paper about this. "

OGS Hmmm, why did Pantagraph print... wrote on Aug 10, 2007 9:08 AM:

" ...this one? There is ALOT of crime...beatings, stabbings etc that goes on in this town that you people no longer print. Is keeping a "good image" for the city more important than giving people some sense of a warning? Interesting how important it was for the Pantagraph to take a pro-ban stance on the smoking ban, but will not warn its' citizens about how dangerous it is to be out walking at night. "

" people robbing for a few items of really no excessive value!! It's not like they were going to get an expensive painting or millions in jewelry, just a few penny ante articles. Next stop is a 4x 6 and baloney sandwiches and water. Now that is a real trade off!!! If only people would stop to think about the trade off and quit thinking they can get by with it maybe they would quit this BALONEY. I wouldn't go to jail for any less than a billion dollars. I could blow a million in a few months so that's not enough. So if I'm going to jail it's going to be worth my while not some little piddly amount. Besides I'm claustrophobic. "
