Key to school diversity may be teacher training
NORMAL — The training of educators is key to a successful diversity program in public schools, according to Paula Ressler, associate professor of English at Illinois State University. Ressler supports the concept of expanded diversity curriculum for students in the university’s education department. “My focus is on teaching educators in the university to prepare all teachers to be the best teachers they can be for all students,” said Ressler. Ressler and other members of the Central Illinois Safe Schools Alliance have provided training on GLBT issues to counselors and teachers in Unit 5 and hope to expand the training to District 87. “We want to make people aware of what’s going on with these issues. The schools certainly haven’t touched the issues of gender identity,” said Ressler. The Safe Schools Alliance, a community organization that works with other groups to address issues that may lead to violence in schools, plans to organize a public meeting in Bloomington in the coming months to discuss safety issues. The classroom environment can provide a safe place for GLBT students, if teachers are trained to handle sexual orientation and gender issues, according to the National Education Association, the nation’s leading teacher organization. The first step may be for teachers to intervene when students make homophobic remarks and refrain from making such remarks themselves. School personnel rarely intervene when inappropriate language is used in their presence, according to 83 percent of GLBT students who responded to a survey cited by NEA in a guidebook for teachers on GLBT issues. And 61 percent of GLBT students reported hearing school personnel make offensive remarks. “The word gay should not be thrown around the classroom as an insult,” said Ressler. |
