Illinois State offers two series of adult enrichment programs

NORMAL -- Illinois State University’s adult enrichment programs, which include Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors, will start in September and continue through January.

Sponsored by the Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, most academy classes are held at Conference Services in the Professional Development Building at 207 S. Main St., Normal. Professors classes are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Emerson Street and Towanda Avenue, Bloomington.

Academy of Seniors

Academy offers four sessions for $40. Speakers and their topics include:

We’ll Always Have the Movies: American Cinema During World War II -- Robert McLaughlin and Sally Parry, Illinois State -- Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Reading Plays (But Were Afraid to Ask) -- Jared Brown, professor emeritus, Illinois Wesleyan University -- Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The Birth of a New Nation: 1783-1800 -- Dan Leifel, Illinois State -- Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Discovering Latin America -- Michael Weis, Illinois Wesleyan -- Nov. 6, 8, 13 and 15 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Religion on the Public Square -- James Bortell, United Methodist retired minister, and retired judge John Freese -- Jan. 15, 17, 22 and 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Mornings with the Professors

Professors are scheduled for Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Speakers and their topics are:

Does the President Have Unilateral War Powers? -- Robert Bradley, Illinois State, Oct. 5.

A Brief History of the American Denial of History -- Tim Hunt, Illinois State, Oct. 12.

Ethics, Leadership and Culture: The Hallmarks of Good Business -- Joseph Solberg and Ricard Ringer, Illinois State, Oct. 19.

ISU’s 150th Birthday Bash: New Perspective on the University’s History -- John Freed, Illinois State, Oct. 26.

Traditional Field Studies in Geology: Still Important? -- David Malone, Illinois State, Nov. 2.

Professors is $40 for all five sessions or $15 for individual sessions and may be paid at the door.
