Lawmakers scarce on Sunday

SPRINGFIELD -- The magic number is down to 11. That’s how many Illinois lawmakers showed up Sunday for special sessions ordered by Governor Rod Blagojevich.

The governor has been calling one special session after another in an attempt to pressure lawmakers into agreeing to his budget demands. He called two for Sunday, bringing the total number of sessions to 15.

But legislators long ago stopped taking them seriously. That’s partly because the Democratic governor doesn’t submit any proposals for lawmakers to consider.

Only six of 118 representatives bothered to show up this time. They were joined by five of 59 senators.

Lawmakers are waiting to see whether Blagojevich will sign or reject a state budget they approved last week.

" Maybe they have the right idea. Ignore Rod and he will go crying back to Chicago. Maybe Gov Daley can help him get them back in line. "

" Sounds like our great gov isn't going to sign. And, of course, what else do we expect because Rod didn't get what he wanted and there was too much pork in it. Seems like they can all agree to discriminate and segregate though and put through those health bans. What a government!!! "
