Play on agenda of Red Hat Society weekend gathering
BLOOMINGTON — A weekend pizza party and pajama dance will provide a chance for women to sample the Red Hat Society spirit. The Heartland Queen’s Council Illinois Red Hat Fun-Vention is Sept. 7 to 9 at the Double Tree Hotel & Convention Center. The theme is “Where The Little Girl In You Comes Out to Play.” “We can, will and should kick up our heels and celebrate our lives joyfully,’ said Marilee Alvey, who is queen (president) of the Ooh La La chapter in Bloomington. “One of our most popular events has always been our pajama party on Friday night. We dress up in nightclothes as wild and crazy as our imaginations will allow,” Alvey said. Friday’s session runs from 7 p.m. to midnight and includes karaoke and a choreographed line dance. “Our pajama party is particularly a joyous occasion because, when you think about it, there are so many women who don’t get to dance. They’re single, they’re widowed or their husbands don’t like to dance. The joy in the room at these dances is contagious and particularly touching with women over 50,” Alvey said. Highlights Sept. 8 include a Victorian tea and style show, with fashions made out of lace tablecloths and doilies, and glamour night. “You will see some long glittery gowns, some fringe-covered satin dresses, large hats, tiaras, lace gloves and everything you could ever imagine when, as a little girl, you played in your mother’s dress-up clothes,” Alvey said. “This is where you get to wear anything that suits your fancy.” A nationally known a cappella group, called Chapter 6, will perform. On Sept. 9, the only scheduled event is breakfast. “It’s all about fun. Since laughter is considered the best medicine, this is the best way to take our medicine,” said Alyce White, queen of the Bloomington Hattitude Sisters. Red Hatters have very few rules, except women older than 50 wear red hats with purple attire and women younger than 50 wear pink hats with lavender dress. If it is your birthday month, participants wear either a purple hat and red dress or lavender hat and pink dress, White said. Red Hats When: Sept. 7-9 Where: Double Tree Hotel & Convention Center, 10 Brickyard Drive, Bloomington Cost: $150, payable to Heartland Queen’s Council, c/o Rita Miller, 1204 Searle Drive, Normal, IL 61761 Reservation deadline: Aug. 15 |
