Shriners Kids’ Day returning to Gibson City park on Sunday

GIBSON CITY — For almost 17 years, the Corn Belt Shrine Club has hosted its Kids’ Day in North Park.

The 10-cent tickets gave the holder an opportunity to play games and win a prize every time, ride go-karts and golf carts and take a pony ride.

Or buy a hot dog, bag of popcorn, cotton candy, sno-cone or a drink.

But to keep up with inflation, the Shriners have raised the ticket fee to 25 cents.

Ticket-holders can still win prizes, take a go-kart ride and buy food, but they also can dunk someone at the dunk tank or take a walk on the cake walk circle.

Proceeds support the club’s activities and Shriners’ Hospitals for Children.

This year, the event begins with a parade at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, stepping off from the corner of East Third Street before heading north on Sangamon Avenue to North Park.

The Shriners fund 19 orthopedic and three burn centers across the country. Treatment is free.

The local club will sponsor a free screening for children younger than 18 who have orthopedic difficulties, burns or other problems at Masonic Lodge 733, 108 E. Eighth St. The screening will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday. No appointment is necessary.

For information about the screening or Kids’ Day, call (217) 784-8835 or (217) 784-4956 or Mohammed Shrine Hospital Committee at (309) 633-2320.
