NORMAL -- Illinois State backup setter Jessica Pratapas will be out for the season after learning her right knee will need surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Pratapas, a sophomore, injured her knee in July during a pick-up scrimmage. She faces a six- to eight-month rehabilitation period following the surgery, which is scheduled for Monday.

Pratapas, who sat out the 2005 season as redshirt, appeared in 17 matches last season.

" Doesn't anyone else find the extreme number of knee surgeries in high school track, volleyball and even softball players alarming? Have we caught up with the boys? We're willing to destroy our bodies for the glory of high school or college sports and look forward to a lifetime of knee replacements and arthritis. I could not believe all the glorification stories on Amber May. Do you think she'll be able to walk by the time she's thirty??? "

" Sorry to see that she will miss the season. But don't we see pro football players coming back from torn ACLs in about 45 days now? "
