Insight prepared to miss launch of Big Ten network

This should be a banner year for the Big Ten Conference. The problem is few may get a chance to see it. The Big Ten’s new television network is struggling to reach agreements with the biggest cable providers in the Midwest, and the clock is ticking on the Sept. 1 openers.

Like many major cable providers, Insight Communications, which serves the Bloomington-Normal market, is no closer to reaching a deal with the conference than it was a month ago.

Negotiations between the fledgling network and the cable providers still are ongoing, but “we’re at the same impasse that we were before,” said Insight spokesman John Niebur.

Niebur said Insight is prepared to allow the Sept. 1 launch date pass without a deal.

“We have to be able to do that,” he said. “We have to watch out for our business, and I don’t think there’s a major cable operator in the country that has given in to their demands.”

If the Big Ten Network is included in an expanded cable package, the monthly cost would increase by about $1 a month for all cable subscribers.

“We don’t think a majority of customers want that,” Niebur said.

The sticking point is that the conference insists that it must be on basic expanded cable. Like Insight, Comcast and Time Warner say no way.

“When the cable company decides to send 70 channels — the food channel, and the dog channel and the bike channel and the jewelry channel — into your home, (we believe) that the Big Ten Network deserves to be in that grouping,” Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said. “Everything else is pretty negotiable.”

" Owned by News Corp and 49% of BTN is owned by Fox Sports, which also owned by News Corp, so they make money on both ends. Maybe they could charge an extra 2 cents a month to one of the 50 shopping channels that I get to keep my bill at the same price. "

" What I have heard about it is that most cable companies want to make it a PPV type thing like HBO or NFL Sunday Ticket for DTV. Big Ten wants it to come free with all the other channels in your lineup and don't want a company to raise their price just for their station. It's not hard to just add one channel and not change your price. DTV has done it why can't insight. Well what do I care I am ready to start watchin on the 1st on my DTV! "

" It would be nice to know what is REALLY hanging this up. My guess is it has more to do with Comcast taking the Insight systems in January than Insight. Insight is under orders to hold the line on all expenses right now. Although a $1 per sub sounds like a little, to Comcast it's probably not acceptable. As far as who pays for networks, cable companies pay per subscriber to carry a network, but not all. The Big Ten network asking price must be out of line or Insight/Comcast would take it. If you want the Big Ten network and Insight won't pick it up, drop them and get DISH. This story shows why an ala carte cable system is needed! "

" If the Big Ten Schools are not making enough money now then they should re-evaluate their budgets just like the rest of us have to due. I suppose they have exhausted raising ticket prices, parking, food & concessions and now they want us to pay to watch sold out OSU games on TV? The BTN will not gain many new fans and will lose a lot more lifelong loyal ones instead. What will they think of next? "

" There are a lot of worthless stations on the expanded package. Get rid of about 20 of those, and we'll be in good shape. It's too bad because the cable company really has us tied on this one. For anyone from Insight to say they are looking out for their customers is a downright lie, and perhaps the funniest thing I have heard all year. "

" the Basic Channels because of all the trash coming into my home. I kept the Basic to keep abreast of the news and even find myself keeping busy and missing most of that. I personally feel if the acutal costs were broken down and we saw Net profit against Net costs we could all enjoy the full packace for $40.00 a month. It all boils down to selective watching when we have television. NCAA and highschool sports are the best there is, but we'll never see it because of greed! "

IlliniBird... wrote on Aug 10, 2007 11:35 PM:

" IF (note : IF) it's truly down to whether or not it's televised on the basic channel tier and the BTN is open to the $$$ negotiations, than it shouldn't be an issue IMO. I am subject to sooooo many channels that I could care less about in order to get the few channels that I actually want to watch, this should not be an issue. I don't watch the Speed Channel, The Golf Channel, any shopping channels, any children's channels, CSPAN, CMT, Oxygen, Soap Opera Channel, local AD Channel, the 3 local religious channels, etc. yet I am having to pay for them as part of my basic cable lineup. Until there is an ala carte option, everyone will be subject to paying for channels that they do not care to watch. I, for one, would like the BTN and who is listening to my request for service? "

Gianni wrote on Aug 10, 2007 11:20 PM:

" Before cable, the government played a healthy role in regulating the airwaves. It's time that they intervened with cable and required companies to provide free cable (subsidized by taxes) to those who can't afford it. All Americans should have equal access to TV programming. "
