5 years ago (2002): Illinois State’s football team practiced its passing game in the afternoon with the players in shorts and senior wideout Vito Golson impressed head coach Denver Johnson with several one-handed catches.
15 years ago (1992): The Bloomington Lady Hearts withstood 108-degree temperature to beat Topton, Pa., 4-0 in the Amateur Softball Association Women’s Fastpitch National Tournament at Redding, Calif. Zam Mogill and Beth Schrader combined on a three-hitter and Julie Sexton blasted a three-run homer.
25 years ago (1982): Jerry Haas of Belleville beat Rick Ten Broeck of Chicago in a three-hole playoff for the Illinois State Men’s Amateur golf title at Country Club of Peoria. Bloomington’s Mike Milligan, who won in 1974 against Haas’ brother Jay, was second by one shot with 291 for 72 holes.
50 years ago (1957): Illinois State football coach Ed Struck has asked 36 upperclass candidates to report back to the campus Sept. 2 to open practice for the 1957 season. Heading the group of 16 returning lettermen are co-captains John Thomas, quarterback from Farmer City, and Jack Mitchell, Pekin end.
