12-under Angels win Northern Nationals
The BNGSA Angels 12-under softball team capped off an outstanding season by winning the ASA Northern National Tournament in Brooklyn Park, Minn., earlier this month. The tournament featured 38 teams from 16 states.
The Angels went 8-0 en route to the championship. Their roster included Taylor Beach, Abby Bender, Abby Campbell, Mikaela Carr, Shelby Ewen, Stephanie Hintz, Reilly Lamb, Abby Lyons, Kara Neisen, Nicole Nonnemacher, Katie Schultz and Jaimee Wiseman. Coaches were Marc Lyons, Joe Bender and Eric Schultz.
The Angels finished the season with an 88-6 record and won eight tournament championships. They also placed second in the ASA State Tournament and third in the Twin City Classic.
Area hoops team wins at AYBT nationals
The Bloomington Shockers, an eighth-grade boys basketball team, were named the national champions at the American Youth Basketball Tournament held July 26-29 in Normal.
Team members include Addison Ahart, Brad Connor, DJ Gillispie, Danny Gravitt, Hayden Hoerdemann, Max Martin, Parker Musselman, Cameron Smith and Ben Weber. Coaches are Peter Martin and Dan Weber.
Gordon vaults to national crown
Eric Gordon of Normal cleared 10 feet, 3 inches to win the sub-youth division national championship in pole vaulting at the AAU Junior Olympic Games Aug. 1 in Knoxville, Tenn.
Gordon trains in the summer with the Flying Dragons Pole Vault Club and is coached by Mike Cockerham.
