Chiefs handle Cougars
By Pantagraph staff
Robert Hernandez worked five shut-out innings as the Peoria Chiefs defeated Kane County, 5-2, in Midwest League play at Geneva.
Hernandez (5-8) allowed a walk and a double with one out in the first inning then retired the next 14 Cougars he faced, striking out three Kane County batters. Casey Lambert struck out five in two innings of shut-out relief of Hernandez to earn the hold.
Ryne Malone was 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored twice to spark the Peoria offense. Derek Schermehorn also had two hits and an RBI while Darwin Barney plated two runs.
With the weekend sweep of Kane County, the Chiefs find themselves 3½ games up on the Cougars in the wild card race.
