Pontiac HS board makes own budget without knowing funding
PONTIAC — The budget stalemate in Springfield was the hot topic during Monday night’s Pontiac Township High School board meeting, with school officials moving forward on their own budget even with funding levels from the state unknown. The board also heard updates on renovations to the auditorium and a possible name change to a vocational center at the school. Superintendent Leo Johnson presented a tentative budget for the 2008 fiscal year with estimated revenues based on the school’s history. The board approved the tentative budget, which will be made public for 30 days and voted on again in September, Johnson said. “I think we are good with this budget, but it may need some more tweaking over the month as I get news from Springfield,” Johnson said. “We will then be able to approve the final numbers in September when there is a (state) budget.” The board will still have a school budget to vote on even if the state can’t get its act together, Johnson said. “The legislators are doing their job ... but we should be fine in the long run. I just hope that Springfield will get the job done,” he said. Johnson was optimistic about how the school would fare if a state budget is passed, noting a planned increase in spending per student of $400. He also said officials were working on raising the reimbursement for special education teachers from $8,000 to $9,000. Auditorium and LAVC update In an unrelated item, Johnson also updated the board on renovations to the auditorium, which have been going on all summer and include improvements to lighting and sound equipment. Johnson said the electrician should finish work soon, with the entire project set for completion by Aug. 24. Additionally, the director of the Livingston Area Vocational Center said officials are considering changing the center’s name. Director Amy Smith said the word “vocational” has negative connotations, and one possible new name could be the Livingston Area Career Center. “This is an idea that has been on the back burner for a couple of years now,” she said. “We will be having a resolution on this next month, and I hope that you all will give us a blessing and we will be on our way.” |
