FARMER CITY — The owner of Strat-O-Span in rural Farmer City is estimating the damage of Saturday’s fire at $250,000, but is optimistic the company will rebuild.

“It’s under consideration,” said Mark Stratmann, president of Strat-O-Span. “We’ve been there such a long time (since 1962). “We’re going to give it our best shot to rebuild.”

The company’s warehouse building at the Farmer City plant, about two miles west of Farmer City, burned to the ground early Saturday. Firefighters said the building was nearly gone by the time the fire was discovered shortly after 5:30 a.m.

Farmer City, LeRoy and Downs firefighters were able to save the adjacent office area.

Strat-O-Span is a manufacturer of lumber and steel products, most notably building trusses. It has been a family-owned business since its formation in 1899, and Stratmann is a fourth-generation employee. The Farmer City branch, one of three in the United States, has two full-time and two part-time employees.

Fire officials do not suspect foul play. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office is expected to issue a formal report later this week.

" Sure do hope they rebuild. The place hasn't been the same since good ol' Gene passed away. Good Luck. "
