Helicopter flying low around B-N doing utility checks
By Pantagraph staff
BLOOMINGTON — A utility company helicopter is making low passes over areas inside the Twin Cities this week so crew members can check electrical equipment.
The AmerenIP helicopter hadn’t previously been used in urban areas, and company officials are trying to notify area residents of the flights that began Tuesday.
AmerenIP customer service supervisor Peter Millburg said his company is using thermal imaging equipment on the helicopter to inspect high-voltage lines and identify line components operating at temperatures higher than that of other equipment nearby. The helicopter hovers 40 to 80 feet off the ground.
Millburg said the helicopters give an unobstructed view of the lines and allow workers to more quickly cover territory. The company had used helicopters in previous inspections in rural areas and vehicle and foot patrols in towns.
AmerenIP officials hope the flights in Bloomington-Normal will finish tonight, but they could continue work until Thursday, Millburg said.
