Helicopter flying low around B-N doing utility checks

BLOOMINGTON — A utility company helicopter is making low passes over areas inside the Twin Cities this week so crew members can check electrical equipment.

The AmerenIP helicopter hadn’t previously been used in urban areas, and company officials are trying to notify area residents of the flights that began Tuesday.

AmerenIP customer service supervisor Peter Millburg said his company is using thermal imaging equipment on the helicopter to inspect high-voltage lines and identify line components operating at temperatures higher than that of other equipment nearby. The helicopter hovers 40 to 80 feet off the ground.

Millburg said the helicopters give an unobstructed view of the lines and allow workers to more quickly cover territory. The company had used helicopters in previous inspections in rural areas and vehicle and foot patrols in towns.

AmerenIP officials hope the flights in Bloomington-Normal will finish tonight, but they could continue work until Thursday, Millburg said.

A helo pilot wrote on Aug 15, 2007 4:13 PM:

" It's common practice to use helos in this way. It's done all over the country. The helicopters are use to save money and be more efficient than sending people into the back country. The helos are normally fully instrumented to assess operating anomalies before they become your problem, power outages. It's easy to see how the helo could cover alot more line and more accurately. No, I don't work for the power company and yes I am a helo pilot. "

" That's a good one. About the truth. I have Corn Belt where I live, but my son has AmerenIP and his bills have been outrageous. He went from $74 a month to almost $300 a month now. And they say they are hurting. Who are they kidding? And I don't buy that they needed to increase everyone's bills that much to keep on functioning. Get real. "
