Cooler days, more rain in Twin City forecast

BLOOMINGTON — Parts of Central Illinois got some much-needed rain and a short respite from the sweltering heat Tuesday, and more of the same could be on the way.

Illinois State University and the Pantagraph recorded 0.2 of an inch of rain from the storm that swept through the Twin Cities in the morning Tuesday.

While that wasn’t enough to help the parched lawns, there is a 40 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Wednesday morning and a chance rain could redevelop in the afternoon and evening, said Heather Stanley, a meteorologist with the National Weather System in Lincoln.

Stanley said the system will be similar to the one that moved into the area on Tuesday, hanging up in the northern part of the state and dampening the upper half, including the Twin Cities.

The chance of rain continues on Thursday but drops to 30 percent.

As happened Tuesday, the cloud cover that accompanies today’s storms could ward off the expected 94-degree high, Stanley said. Or it could just reach that high after the clouds move out.

If the temperature tops out at 94 degrees, the heat index could hit 101 degrees, the weather service predicts.

The good news is the area is in line to return to more typical mid-August temperatures at the end of the week.

Friday’s high is expected to be 85 degrees. Saturday will be even cooler, topping out at 81 degrees, before warming up to a high of 84 degrees on Sunday.

The chance of rain returns to the forecast Saturday through Tuesday.

“We are in a warm pattern,” said Stanley. And the area will stay in that pattern until a new system moves in, she said.

But we shouldn’t see the sweltering heat that’s blanketed the state for the last couple of weeks. Stanley said temperatures are expected to be at or a little above the normal highs in the mid-80s.

That should be welcome news to all the children and teachers returning to school this week. The first day of school for District 87 students in Bloomington is Aug. 21. Students in Normal-based Unit 5 will start Aug. 22.
