5 years ago (2002): Former Lockport coach Joe Gura was hired as head basketball coach at Pontiac High School. Gura replaces Tom Shields, who resigned last month after eight seasons to accept a teaching and coaching position in Kalamazoo, Mich.
15 years ago (1992): Chuck Barnes scored 21 of his team-high 23 points in the second half to spark Illinois State to a 124-61 victory over Osseport of Maryaburg at Antwerp, Belgium. The triumph kept ISU unbeaten after five games on its European trip and pushed the average margin of victory to 46.2 points.
25 years ago (1982): Beich’s Bobcats of Bloomington, with Steve King and Scott Hartema spearheading the offense and pitcher Mick Freed firing a three-hitter, defeated two-time defending champion Chesapeake, Va., 5-2, in the opening round of the Thorobred Baseball League World Series at Salt Lake City.
50 years ago (1957): Ron Felheimer pitched a no-hit, no-run game at O’Neil Park to lead the Pontiac Chiefs to a 10-0 victory over Pontiac-Watseka Dairy in the ASA Regional Class B Tournament. Jim Melton’s two-run homer led Carlock over Breen Beverage, 8-4, in another tourney game.
