Sligh named ISU women’s golf coach

NORMAL — Illinois State completed the split of its men’s and women’s golf programs by hiring Darby Sligh as women’s head coach Tuesday.
Sligh, a 2005 graduate of the University of Alabama and women’s golf coach at Newberry (S.C.) College the past two seasons, takes over the women’s program that had been overseen previously by Ray Kralis. Kralis will continue as the Redbirds men’s coach.
Sligh led Newberry to a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) championship, won league coach of the year honors and had six players named to the all-SAC team.
“Illinois State provides all the necessary tools to build champions both on and off the course, and the support from the athletic department and community is second to none,” Sligh said.
Kralis said both programs are poised to take the necessary steps to go from consistent conference competitor to a pair of programs that are able to compete at the national level.
“Within the last few years, both our men’s and women’s teams have challenged at both the conference and the national levels,” Kralis said. “Having two head coaches will give us the best chance to do that year in and year out.
“Time is right to make a national push.”
