NORMAL — The Illinois State football team will begin the season right where it ended the 2006 campaign – ranked in the top 10 nationally.

The Redbirds are listed No. 7 in the preseason Football Championship Subdivision rankings of the Sports Network announced Tuesday.

ISU was ranked eighth in the final poll of 2006 when the Redbirds advanced to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs and finished with a 9-4 record.

ISU is among four Gateway Conference teams listed in the top 12. Youngstown State is No. 5, Northern Iowa No. 9 and Southern Illinois No. 12.

Also part of the Redbirds’ schedule are No. 4 North Dakota State and No. 17 Eastern Illinois.

Two-time defending national champion Appalachian State received 67 of a possible 71 first-place votes while holding on to the No. 1 ranking. Montana is second with Massachusetts third.

The new FCS Coaches Poll will release its preseason rankings next week.

Waiting on Mordis

ISU is awaiting results of a magnetic resonance imaging test on H-back Dave Mordis, who suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage.

A preseason all-Gateway selection, Mordis caught 20 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown last season and is a key blocker in the Redbird rushing game.

Hitting the water

Taking a break from the rigors of 16 practices in the past 12 days, the Redbirds called off their scheduled afternoon workout Tuesday and sent the team to Fairview Aquatic Center.

“These guys have worked hard in really some of the worse heat that I can remember in my tenure here,” ISU coach Denver Johnson said. “There is a morale boost aspect to it, but there is also a therapeutic aspect to it as well. It is a welcomed break and one that we are glad to do for them.”

The Redbirds return to the field for their final two-a-day practice sessions today. ISU will hold a public scrimmage Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hancock Stadium.
